Balboa Park in the centre of San Diego is one on the largest urban parks in the United States, covering 485 hectares of grounds. Its size is matched by the incredibly broad range of attractions held within its perimeter. With museums and galleries, theatres and restaurants, not to mention beautiful gardens and even a world-famous zoo, it is no wonder that Balboa Park is extremely popular with tourists and locals alike.
The sixteen museums you’ll find in the park cater for every interest. Choose from the exciting Air & Space Museum, home of the actual Apollo 9 Command Module, or the Automotive Museum where you’ll get to see Frank Sinatra’s former car, amongst more than 80 other impressive vehicles. Art enthusiasts will love the San Diego Museum of Art, the regions oldest and largest art museum, as well as the Museum of Photographic Arts.
Catch one of the many performances on offer in the park’s 9 theatres. Children will love the shows at the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre, with marionettes, hand puppets and shadow puppets, or try The Old Globe with its impressive repertoire of plays and musicals.
Balboa Park’s many and varied gardens rival any of the indoor attractions. Wander among exotic desert plants in the Cactus Garden, or stroll through a formal garden based on a Royal Palace in Seville in the Alcazar Garden.
Don’t miss a magical ride on the traditional Carousel which dates back to 1910. Its beautiful hand-carved animals are perfectly preserved, along with the folk art murals. Or hop on board the Miniature Railroad for a short trip through 1.5 hectares of parkland. Over on the eastern side of the park, you’ll find a golf course and tennis courts if you fancy working off a bit of steam.

The park grounds are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Most museums are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but you can check details for individual venues in advance on the official website.
