The best area to stay in Atahualpa is along the beachfront, particularly near the main Malecon in areas like Engabao or Playas.

Engabao offers a more relaxed and authentic experience. The area is known for its uncrowded beaches and a strong local fishing community. You'll find charming guesthouses and a few boutique hotels here, many with direct beach access. It's ideal for those seeking peace and quiet, with opportunities to observe local life and enjoy fresh seafood.

For travellers looking for more amenities and a livelier atmosphere, Playas is a good option. The Malecon in Playas is lined with restaurants, shops, and places to enjoy a drink. The beach here is wider and often has more activity, including local vendors. Families often find Playas appealing due to the range of dining options and the ease of finding activities for all ages.

Both areas offer direct access to the Pacific Ocean, making them excellent choices for beach lovers.

The best time to go to Atahualpa is during the dry season, which runs from May to December.

During these months, you'll experience consistently sunny weather and pleasant temperatures, typically ranging from 25°C to 30°C. This period is ideal for enjoying the coastal activities and exploring the natural beauty of the region without the interruption of heavy rainfall. The ocean is generally calmer, making it superb for swimming and water sports.

Couples looking for a relaxing beach holiday will find this time particularly appealing. The clear skies and warm waters create an inviting environment for enjoying the beaches, such as Playa Grande, and taking romantic strolls along the shore. You can also comfortably explore the nearby Machalilla National Park, known for its diverse wildlife and pristine landscapes, without worrying about muddy trails.

Solo travellers seeking adventure and outdoor activities will also benefit greatly from visiting during the dry season. Conditions are excellent for surfing, diving, and hiking.
