A triumphant arch built under the rule of Napoleon in the 19th centurybeautifully frames the entrance to Milan’s largest public park.

TheArch of Peace is a triumphal arch that lies on the southern edge of sprawlingSempione Park near the historic centre of Milan. It’s an excellent example ofneoclassical architecture built under the rule of Napoleon. Stand in front of thegrand arch with the park in the backdrop for a picturesque photo opportunity ofa classic European monument.

Thearch stands over what was once the Porta Sempione, the gates to the city whenan ancient Roman wall surrounded Milan. Construction first started in 1807 andthe arch was completed in 1838, in time for Napoleon III to triumphantly enterMilan through his arch after the Battle of Magenta in 1859.

TheArch of Peace is 25 metres (82 feet) high and 24 metres (79 feet) wide. Come onfoot or by bicycle from the direction of Sempione Park. The arch is one of themost popular attractions in the public park, which is the largest green spacein Milan. Take your time enjoying the shady trees and flowerbeds and stop byBranca Tower. The arch becomes visible from some distance away so you won’thave any trouble finding your way there.

Thearch resembles other significant European gates including the Arc de Triomphein Paris and the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Elaborate designs adorn almostevery surface. See statues and carvings that tell the story of important eventsin Europe’s history, such as the Battle of Leipzig. Look for the Congress ofVienna and several Greek gods including Apollo, Minerva and Mars.

Themost prominent feature is the Chariot of Peace and six horses that sit proudlyatop the arch. The bronze statue was made by famous sculptor AbbondioSangiorgio. His work appears throughout Milan in other significant sites suchas the Royal Palace.

TheArch of Peace is accessible at all hours and there is no admission fee. It iseasiest to reach by metro, tram or car. You’ll find plenty of street parkingthe area for a small fee.
