Head to this vibrant entertainment district on the banks of the Oslofjord, situated in a former shipyard.

Over the past 30 years, Aker Brygge has been transformed into Oslo’s most fashionable district. For more than 100 years, until 1982, this was the site of one of Norway’s largest shipyards, but the former industrial buildings have been completely renovated, and now house a wide range of galleries and boutiques, cafés and restaurants. This waterfront cultural and entertainment hub now attracts over 12 million visitors every year.

One of the most popular features is the quayside promenade, which looks out over the waters of the Oslofjord. Join the crowds for a gentle stroll, especially pleasant in the summer months when you’ll be joined by street performers and musicians.

Make sure you have your camera with you, as there are stunning photo opportunities at the marina, particularly at sunset, with medieval fortress Akershus visible on the far bank. Here, you’ll also find the Eternal Peace Flame burning atop a flower-shaped sculpture. Ingenious controls allow this flame to stay alight, no matter how harsh the weather.

Art enthusiasts will easily be able to spend a few hours browsing the many galleries in this district. The emphasis is mainly on contemporary art from both Norway and abroad, all of excellent standard. Alternatively, if shopping is more your passion, there are plenty of unique and high-end boutiques awaiting you. You’ll find both men’s and women’s fashion, as well as jewellery and accessories.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, take your pick from the many cafés, bistros and restaurants dotted throughout the district. There is something to suit every taste and budget. Many of the venues stay open until the early hours, so this is also the top spot for nightlife.

Aker Brygge is also the location for many public festivals and events that are held throughout the year and especially around Midsummer. Check the official website for an up-to-date programme.

Aker Brygge is located near City Hall, and is well served by all forms of public transport. Parking is available in the car park under the wharf. Most facilities are closed on Sundays and major public holidays, although restaurants and bars may remain open. Some sections of the wharf may be closed, as renovations are in progress.
