With its stunning coastline, lively bars and boutique shopping, it is little wonder that Manly is one of Sydney’s most popular beaches. Just a ferry trip from the city centre, this laidback area attracts surfers, families and lovers of Sydney’s nightlife. Take a dip in the ocean, walk along the esplanade and enjoy a meal at a beachfront café.
The 40-minute ferry trip from Circular Quay to Manly is an attraction all by itself. Enjoy spectacular views as you sail out into the blue waters of Sydney Harbour. Keep your camera handy as you pass by the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. As you travel through the opening to the Tasman Sea, the water can become a bit rough so don’t eat a big meal beforehand.
Once you arrive, explore the sheltered Manly Cove, a small inlet with calm waters perfect for swimming. Relax by the water or enjoy some fresh seafood at one of the beachside restaurants.
Navigate to the other side of the Manly peninsula via The Corso. This pedestrian mall is an excellent place to shop for souvenirs, find a refreshing cool drink or watch street performers. Admire local paintings and crafts at the nearby Manly Art Gallery and Museum.
On the ocean side of the peninsula, Manly Beach provides some of Sydney’s best surfing. Hire surfboards or organise lessons through one of the local operators. Cool off with a refreshing swim. Make sure to stay between the flags in the designated swimming areas under the watchful gaze of Sydney’s famous lifeguards. Spread out your towel on Manly’s golden sand and lie down and work on your tan. The Australian sun is very strong year-round, so be sure to pack your sunscreen.
