Discover one of Indonesia’s most scenic Hindu temples, complete with lunar festivities and shrines to Brahma, sitting high on a headland over Senggigi Beach.

Batu Bolong Temple, a small yet picturesque Hindu place of worship, sits high above Senggigi Beach on a rocky headland. A vast cave gapes in the rock beneath the temple, giving the temple its Indonesian name, batu (black) and bolong (hole). As the wind and sea spray roar through the cave, a whistling sound can be heard, giving the temple an atmosphere of otherworldliness. The temple looks out toward Gunung Agung, Bali’s most revered volcano, making it a stunning viewpoint at sunset.

A path curves along the shoreline from Senggigi Beach to the temple. Follow the path south to a cliff-edge trail winding across the headland to Batu Bolong. This temple is regularly used as a place of worship, so ensure you dress modestly or cover up with a sarong or sash. Local children may offer you a sarong to rent if you forget.

Enter the temple to find an empty chair, representative of the Hindu god, Brahma. Legend tells of virgins being sacrificed to the sea from the headland’s protruding rock. Traditional Hindu festivals and ceremonies are still held here every lunar month.

Take in impressive views across Senggigi Beach from the temple. The tranquil waters of the beach make it a popular spot for families to swim. Once you’ve explored the temple, discover the Sengiggi Art Market or enjoy a drink at one of the beachside bars and restaurants. Watch the sun set over the sea and see the lights of local fishing boats flick on as they sail across the water.

Sengiggi Beach features a range of accommodation choices, from hotels run by local families to luxurious resorts, and is an ideal base for exploring the island. Batu Bolong Temple and Senggigi Beach are under an hour’s drive from Lombok International Airport. Express boats from Bali also arrive to Senggigi Beach.
