Speicherstadt featuring heritage architecture, a bridge and a city
Explore the distinctive warehouses and network of canals that characterise this newly renovated historical district, now home to top visitor attractions.

Speicherstadt, or “warehouse city”, located in Hamburg’s port district, stands testament to the flourishing international trade of the 19th and 20th centuries. Now cherished as a heritage site, the impressive red-brick buildings bordering the canal network are home to atmospheric cafés and restaurants, as well as fascinating museums and attractions.

Construction of Speicherstadt began in the 1880s, and it grew to become the largest such warehouse complex in the world. It was conferred special status as a “free port”, where goods could be landed without incurring any customs duties. As such, trade in high-value items flourished, and the warehouses were stocked full of luxury goods, including tobacco, coffee, tea and spices. Nowadays, the remaining functioning warehouses are dedicated to the trade of oriental carpets.

One of the most interesting ways to explore the area is to jump aboard one of the canal boats for a guided tour. Chose the leisurely historic barges, or opt for one of the smaller launches, able to navigate the narrow tidal waterways. Either way, you’ll be treated to a unique perspective of the distinctive Neo-Gothic architecture, characterised by the small towers and decorative features adorning the façades of the buildings.

These warehouses are now home to a number of top attractions. Head to the International Maritime Museum in Kaispeicher B, the oldest of the warehouses, to explore the extensive collection of maritime art, model ships and uniforms, as well as over one million period photographs. Horror fans will love the Hamburg Dungeon, where gruesome tales from the city’s history, such as the torture of smugglers during the Napoleonic invasion, the devastating Great Fire of Hamburg and the cholera epidemic of 1892 are all played out as interactive experiences.

Speicherstadt truly comes to life in the evening, when soft lights illuminate the towering buildings and reflect off the still surfaces of the canals. Join the fashionable crowds heading to the latest restaurants and bars to enjoy an evening’s entertainment in style.

Speicherstadt lies within the HafenCity area of Hamburg. The nearest U-Bahn station is Baumwall.
