Hotel Ca' d'Oro

Corte Barbaro, Venice - Map
Hotel well situated and nice staff, but don't ask for a room with 4 beds. They'll put 4 beds in the handicapped room on the first floor next to the laundry and cleaning supplies area across from the main part of the hotel where everyone else stays. You also won't get phone or wifi connections in that room, and there is no view.

"Lovely little hotel with friendly staff"
I stayed at Ca'Dogaressa for two nights. The hotel is an easy walk from the train station, about 10 minutes; it involves crossing only one small bridge. (Bridges in Venice typically have steps, so carrying luggage over them can be a bit of a pain.) My room was in the Annex, down a narrow side street, and on the ground floor; it was quiet and peaceful. The wifi and air conditioning (important in the midsummer heat!) both worked perfectly, and the room was clean, pretty and comfortable, with easily enough room for two people (I was traveling alone). It was great to be able to come back there at the end of the day to cool off and relax. The bathroom was small and had no separate shower area, but the shower temperature and pressure were both good. The hotel is about a 20-minute walk from the main tourist attractions, and there's a Vaporetto stop very close; there are also plenty of restaurants in the area. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful; they gave me a (free) bottle of chilled water on arrival after seeing how hot I looked (I arrived right after lunch and had luggage to carry from the station), and let me use the printer at the front desk to print my boarding pass for my onward flight. I'm very glad I stayed here, and would recommend it.

"Great location, decent level of comfort"
We had to haul our bags up a couple flights of stairs but we packed light so that wasn't an issue. Also the stairs were wide and the flights were short so it wasn't a big deal. The staff at the front desk were helpful but businesslike (polite but they didn't make you feel welcome). The location is great if you're arriving by train late in the day because it's steps away from the Santa Lucia train station. On the other hand most of the attractions in Venice tend to be on the south side of the island. What we did was take the vaporetto down to San Marco and then we walked back to the hotel from there while checking out the sights along the way. This is easily doable in a day because the island is only ~2km long. There were some ants in our room congregating around the garbage can/fridge (which were clean as far as I could tell). There were only a few small ones but there wasn't any traps or bait set out that I could see. I forgot to mention this to the front desk on our way out because we were in a hurry, but the ants were noticeable enough that housekeeping must be aware of the issue already.

"Convenient with nice touches"
This hotel staff are more courteous and efficient rather than warm and friendly. Hotel is well located a short walk from the train station. Room was adequate, clean and comfortable. But nothing special. The breakfast room with painted high ceilings and chandelier speaks to times past. Breakfast was very good. Would recommend hotel as a base for a day or two to explore the city, but not for anything longer.

Pocket Guide: Venice Cannaregio 3 stars Hotels

For visitors arriving by rail or by bus, Cannaregio is Venice’s front door and the start of the Grand Canal. It sees a lot of passing traffic in terms of canal boats and visitors en route to San Marco, but is otherwise quieter and less touristy than central Venice. Points of interest include the Ghetto area (the original Jewish enclave) with its museums and the majestic Ca d’Oro palace, one of the iconic buildings of the Grand Canal.
