The Testaccio market in Rome is a great place to sample authentic Roman street cuisine,this market offers a wide selection of fresh and delicious food.
Here you can find a variety of stands selling Roman specialities such as supplì (fried rice balls filled with mozzarella), trapizzino (a combination of pizza and sandwich filled with various ingredients), porchetta (roasted pork), tripe alla Romana (tripe cooked with tomato and mint) and much more.

It was built in conjunction with the construction of the Janicolense Walls, extension of the Leonine Walls in defence of the Gianicolo, wanted by Pope Urban VIII Barberini, to replace the previous Porta Portuensis. The Porta Portuensis was one of the southern gates of the Aurelian Walls of Rome.

The fountain is located in the centre of Piazza Testaccio and was made entirely of travertine. The choice of the motif of the amphora, very innovative in its combination of elegance and practicality, is to be found in the very symbol of the ward, which in turn has its roots in the ancient history of the area; already from the second century BC, in fact, on the left bank of the Tiber there were the storage warehouses of the terracotta amphorae containing the supplies of wine and oil destined for Rome, which travelled mainly by river. The oil containers, in particular, could not be reused by law, and therefore had to be destroyed once emptied. Over the years the shards ("testae" in Latin) piled up on the ground behind the warehouses came to form a hill up to 35 metres high, which since the Middle Ages was called "Testaccio".
