Temple of Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil

Sri Kailasanathar Swami Devasthanam (temple) is located behind the Colombo fort railway station. There are some other names for this temple such as Captain's Garden Hindu Temple, Kapikaawatha Shivan temple. Many believes this is the oldest Hindu temple in Colombo. Its history date back to 17th century. Though the buildings here are not that old it is very impressive to see its classic architecture and sculpture. Your chauffer will take you on a tour inside the temple and show you around with interesting information.
Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple

This colourful Buddhist temple which has a history of 120 years is the most visited temple in Colombo. Temple runs a small museum, a collection of various artefacts and antiques belongs to Sri Lanka and different Buddhist cultures such as Chinese, Japanese, Korian, Thai will surprise you. "Seema Malaka" which is an assembly hall for monks designed by famous architecture Geoffrey Bawa, located in a lake close to the temple premises is also a one popular venue in Colombo. Independence Memorial Hall

Independence Memorial Hall is situated in the Independence Square (formerly Torrington Square) at Colombo 7 in the Cinnamon Gardens, this Hall was built for the commemoration of the independence from British in 1940s. The monument was built at the location where the formal ceremony marking the start of self-rule, with the opening of the first parliament by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester occurred at a special podium February 4, 1948. This Hall is designed on the architecture of the Magul Maduwa. (meeting hall of last king of Sri Lanka) located in Kandy. The column and pillars are decorated with traditional Sri Lankan carvings and paintings. It is being one of the popular venue among travellers in Colombo. Pettah Floating Market

Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque

The Jami - Alfar Mosque on 2 nd Cross Street is painted with red and white stripes, similar to an old-fashioned, candy-striped barber's shop. Its col scheme makes its very hard to miss amongst all the other rather shabby Pettah buildings. Over a 100 years old, the mosque was constructed in 1908. Just inside the entrance, the inscription reads the architect was H.L.Saib Lebbe. A friendly security guard may allow you inside (even if you are a women) to view the washing ponds and the rear view of the mosque's clock tower. Women's are not permitted to go inside the prayer halls our . The mosque is soon to undergo expansion to make it into a four - storey complex catering foe between 7,000 8,000 worshippers at one time. However , the façade will retain its current character. Avoid visiting on Fridays when it is at busiest
Colombo Fort
