What you can expect

Jal Sanjhi, meaning “Water Painting,” is a rare temple art that beautifully portrays the life and legends of Lord Krishna, a revered deity in Hinduism. This art form originated in Mathura, the sacred birthplace of Lord Krishna, but over time, it faded into obscurity. Fortunately, it was revived by a dedicated family in Udaipur, who are committed to preserving this unique tradition.

Unlike traditional paintings on paper or cloth, Jal Sanjhi artists use water as their canvas. This artistic legacy has been passed down through generations within the family, with each painting dedicated solely to one subject: Lord Krishna.
The origins of these paintings trace back to a divine moment when 'Radha,' a beloved devotee of Lord Krishna, saw his image reflected in a pond's water. To honour this sacred vision, the image was outlined with delicate flowers, giving birth to the art of Sanjhi. Over time, it evolved into Jal Sanjhi, a pictorial depiction on water that celebrates the divine 'Leela' (play) of Lord Krishna.

Jal Sanjhi begins with handmade paper stencils placed on flat surfaces or water, where dry colours are sifted. Common motifs include peacocks and trees, reflecting the artist's devotion to Lord Krishna. Unlike static art, Jal Sanjhi comes to life on water, offering a dynamic experience. This interaction between artist, viewer, and the fleeting nature of the artwork sets it apart.

Elaborate designs may take from an hour to a month to create, showcasing dedication to the Blue God.
This ancient art, with its vibrant colours derived from nature's treasures and its spiritual significance, is a treasure that has been passed down through generations. Yet, as modernity sweeps in, Jal Sanjhi is losing its guardians. You are not just embarking on a memorable journey into the heart of Indian culture; you are becoming a part of a mission to rescue an endangered art form. Your hands will shape the future of Jal Sanjhi. Your brushstrokes will breathe life into a tradition that has survived for centuries.
