Altos de Chavón is an ancient Mediterranean-style town built above the Chavón River in La Romana, Dominican Republic. It houses a Cultural Centre, the National Archaeological Museum and the so-called City of Artists. It also has a notable amphitheatre.
Its construction began in 1976, when it was necessary to blast a mountain of stone to open a road. Charles Bludhorn, president of an American company, had the idea of using stones to build a 16th century Mediterranean city.
The construction was entrusted to the Italian Roberto Coppa, reflecting a medieval Italian city. The Chavón River, over which the city has a magnificent panoramic view, was the setting chosen for the recording of some famous films. Currently, the city receives thousands of daily visits from tourists from Punta Cana.
Altos del Chavón has a design school, where we will find Fashion, Graphic and Digital Design, Fine Arts and Illustration.

The architects were inspired by Greek culture to build the amphitheatre.
Dozens of important national and international artists have performed in this amphitheatre with a capacity for more than 5,000 people.
