There’s nothing like a grand slam to get you itching to pick up a tennis racquet. You can’t walk out on the clay courts of the French Open or play the well trimmed lawns of Wimbledon but there’s plenty of courts around the world where you can hit a few across the net. Hamilton Island, Australia

Even if you’re off your game, a tennis match in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef is something special. You don’t even need to pack your racquet along with your snorkel in your suitcase. The Hamilton Island Sports Club provides balls and racquets. Court hire is free for guests staying at several of the hotels on the island, including the Reef View Hotel. Social tennis matches are organised by the Club, along with professional coaching.

Cromlix, Dunblane, Scotland

You won’t get much closer to rubbing shoulders with the tennis champions than at Andy Murray’s very own hotel. The small, luxury property sits outside of the town where Murray grew up and where he was recently married. As you’d expect, there is a tennis court and tennis practice wall on the property, with professional coaching available, but it won’t be Murray fixing up your serve. There’s also archery, fishing, falconry and snooker on site.

La Quinta Resort & Club, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, Palm Springs America

With the Santa Rosa mountains in the background and a tennis court fringed by Palm Trees, this resort is classic Palm Springs. Celebrities like to sequester themselves in this very private resort – especially the tennis pros when they’re in town for the BNP Paribas Open. Brush up on your backhand with former champion player Tom Gorman, who runs a year-round weekend clinic program with his USPTA-certified professional team.

St Regis Bahia Beach Resort, Puerto Rico

Working up a sweat on the courts of this luxury five star hotel is well rewarded – court side lounge chairs, sweat towels and drinks are just all part of the St Regis service. There are four deco turf hard courts to choose from – two are floodlit for night tennis if you’re keen to play when the temperature gets cooler. Tucked into a coconut planation right by the beach, the resort is a good option if not everyone in the family is keen to spend their time at the courts. Pools, beach, spa, kids club and an 18-hole golf course can provide a few other distractions.
