Listopedia: The Mardi Gras Bucket List
Mardi Gras baby! Over in Oz the Sydneysiders, and thousands of visitors, are about to get their glitter on.
It’s that time of year again, when the streets will be taken over by lifesavers, firemen and possibly even a pegacorn or two (come on, we all want an excuse to wear that Taylor Swift outfit).
Sydney may get one big night but that doesn’t mean it’s the only city that gets crazy and colourful. Here’s the Expedia Listopedia of Mardi Gras celebrations around the world.
Rio de Janeiro
It’s warm year round and there’s always something on – this is the South American city that never sleeps. So when Mardi Gras roles around, you can expect one big party. Celebrated as Carnival in South America, this is the event you’ll even see celebrities lining up to take part in. Rihanna hardly misses a year, Beyonce and Madonna have both made an appearance. Expect to see plenty of sequins and samba. If you want to stay in the heart of all the action, check into the JW Marriott Hotel Rio de Janeiro right on the famous Copacabana Beach.
New Orleans
This city is famous for jazz, gumbo, gators and the Mardi Gras. Most Americans have the festival on their bucket list but there’s plenty of international visitors too. The essential item of attire is a bead necklace. Festival-goers get dressed up in everything and anything – and sometimes nothing at all – but they always wear a few pairs of plastic purple, green and gold beads. You’ll see them draped on fences, thrown from balconies and flung into the air all night long. The historical French Quartier is where much of the action takes place – stay in the beautiful Omni Royal Orleans Hotel for a taste of traditional New Orleans hospitality.
