Julia and Libby’s top travel tips
If you’re travelling for the first time or just need a refresher list, here are some of our top tips to ensure sure your trip is a more enjoyable experience.
Hydration
Staying well hydrated before a flight is essential! Dehydration can cause your body to become run down, making it easier to pick up bugs while flying. The air inside the cabin on a plane has a humidity between 10-20%, which is a lot lower than a typical indoor humidity of around 30-65%. The lack of humidity dries out our mucous membranes causing dehydration, dry skin and dry eyes. Increase your fluid intake a day prior to a long haul flight – around 2-3 litres a day is a good aim. Coconut water is also great to sip on as its full of electrolytes. Remember to sip on water throughout your flight and avoid caffeine, fizzy drinks and limit alcohol as they will dehydrate you, which is the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve. Auckland Airport has a drink available called 1Above which is a drink formulated to fight jet lag and dehydration and I find it helps. Pack moisturiser and lip balm to use mid-flight and also eye drops if you’re prone to dry eyes.
