48 Hours in Hipster Melbourne
We recently took McKean Studio to Melbourne for the winter instalment of The Finders Keepers Market, an event supporting independent designers and makers, and held twice a year at the beautiful Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton. As far as ‘working weekends’ go, it doesn’t get better than this. While we were in town, we hit a few of our favourite spots and discovered a couple of new places for you to bookmark on your next visit.
EAT
Ombra Salumi Bar
Hands down the best meal of our Melbourne stay, discovered through a combination of laziness and exhaustion. We wanted to try somewhere close to our hotel, and open for an early dinner. All of our boxes were checked with Ombra, and then some. ‘Aperitivo’ takes place from 4.30-6.30 each day, and then the dinner menu kicks off. Salumi, Cicchetti, Formaggio and Pizza, and rounded out with a solid dessert menu. The staff are genuine and lovely, and the service is top notch. Try the Diavola pizza (the chilli is the perfect kick) and don’t miss the salted caramel profiteroles! Legend has it the first night Ombra opened there was supposed to be a cheesecake on the dessert menu – which was promptly dropped on the floor. One of the chef’s whipped up a batch of his salted caramel profiteroles, saving the day, and they haven’t left the menu since! Ombra Salumi Bar, 76 Bourke Street, Melbourne
