Admire the picturesque Australian coastline, surf famous breaks or spot dolphins and migratory birds at a popular east-coast beach town.

Stay a while in Coffs Harbour and discover how the town earned its reputation as a coastal paradise. This popular holiday destination is sure to delight you with its pristine beaches, excellent surf breaks and stunning scenery. Try some outdoor activities, from diving and snorkelling to hiking and bird-watching.

Named after a sea captain who survived a storm here in the 19th century, the city prospered throughout the 20th century as a timber and farming town. Today, it maintains its farming roots but also relies on tourists who are attracted by the relaxed atmosphere and friendly locals.

Surfers should head to Park Beach, home of the town’s most famous break. Take the kids for a swim at Jetty Beach, which has calmer waves and a scenic view of the coastline.

Spot native species of fish, turtles and even sharks with a diving tour of the Solitary Islands Marine Park, which stretches along the coast for 75 kilometres (46.6 miles). Book an organised tour and swim with dolphins and porpoises. Between June and July, you may be lucky enough to see migrating whales. Otherwise, watch wedge-tailed shearwater birds nesting around Muttonbird Island, just off the coast. Enjoy forest vistas, waterfalls and babbling creeks with a hiking trip through the national parks around the city.

As evening approaches, find a spot on the beach and watch the sunset. Choose from a variety of restaurants specialising in a range of cuisines, including Thai, Italian and seafood. On Fridays, enjoy the lively atmosphere of the markets near Park Beach. Listen to live music, sample local produce from food stalls and shop for gifts. The Jetty and Harbourside markets come to life on Sundays, when arts and craft stalls line the promenade.

Fly into Coffs Harbour Airport or use Coffs as a halfway stop on your drive between Brisbane and Sydney. With its scenic beaches, national parks and fascinating wildlife, Coffs Harbour is a destination you will want to return to.

"Comfortable and well equipped apartment. They enlisted that we had so the information needed as we were late checking in. Local shop right over the road. The only downside was the train line running right behind the apartment, which was quite noisy (did seem to stop midnight and 6am)."
