Explore the creative and artistic community of the Village in the Rainforest, deep in the beautiful and historic North Queensland environment.

Located on the Macalister Ranger in the Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforests, Kuranda is a thriving town renowned for its arts and cultural activity. This Village in the Rainforest, to give it its nickname, has attracted settlers throughout history, resulting in a truly unique atmosphere.

Strolling along the streets through Kuranda, you’ll discover a variety of arts and craft galleries. Many talented artists have gravitated to this town over the decades, and their style and techniques have merged with those of the local Djabugay Aboriginal community that have lived in this area for thousands of years.

You will find beautiful examples of Aboriginal craft at the two well-known Kuranda markets. The Heritage Markets are open every day and the Original Markets operate on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. Both offer you the chance to buy handmade jewellery, crafted wood and leather-work. Many pieces feature the famous Australian gemstone: the delicately multi-coloured opal. Buskers and entertainers add to the entertaining experience.

Stop for a delicious bite to eat or a relaxing drink at one of the town’s many restaurants and cafés. You’ll be able to choose from a variety of different international cuisines, washed down with delicious Australian wines and refreshing beers.

Kuranda is also the starting point for many walking trails, and there is something to suit every age or fitness level. The short tours include the spectacular Rainforest Canopy Walk, suspended high above the rainforest floor, which leads to the Barron Falls Lookout, with a wonderful view of the gorge and waterfall.

Make sure you ride on the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Originally built in the 1890s, this track runs through the lush rainforest, past thundering waterfalls and over the Barron Gorge. Kuranda Station is believed to be one to the most photographed railway stations in the world, thanks in part to its impressive cultivated gardens. The journey from Cairns to Kuranda lasts around two hours.

As well as the Kuranda Scenic Railway, Kuranda is accessible by car or on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Free parking is available in the town. Otherwise, regular bus and shuttle services operate from Cairns.
