Hear the inspiring story of the man behind Zaka Art Cafe. His name is Simon Gajaghar, born and raised in Southwest London, United Kingdom. Simon was a shipwright when in 1993 he decided to travel to St. Lucia, the land of his father. He started working as an artisan but times weren’t always easy. He had made some hard-wood carved heads for an art gallery, but they were returned to him as non-sellers.
Simon is a passionate artist so he decided to transform them and give the masks a new life. He split one in half, added a wire hanger and hung it on a wall. It looked beautiful and the first of many masks to come was created. He called it Zaka mask, which is the name of the Haitian god of the forest and agriculture. Enjoy these handcrafted original pieces in every corner of the café. See the artisans making the Zaka masks and other wooden sculptures.
