The best area to stay in Yunzhong is the Ancient City (Gucheng), which is the historic heart of the city.
This neighbourhood is enclosed by well-preserved city walls and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Inside, you'll find narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets lined with traditional courtyard houses, guesthouses, and a variety of local eateries and craft shops. The main north-south axis is the South Street (Nan Dajie), which leads to the impressive City Tower.
For couples, the Ancient City offers a romantic and culturally rich experience. You can enjoy strolls through historic alleys, visit ancient temples such as the Temple of Literature (Wen Miao), and dine in restaurants serving traditional Shanxi cuisine within a beautiful historic setting. Many guesthouses here are renovated courtyard homes, offering a unique stay.
Solo travellers will also find the Ancient City an excellent base. Its compact size and pedestrian nature make it easy to explore independently, and there are numerous opportunities to engage with local culture, from visiting museums like the Rishengchang Former Bank to simply people-watching from a teahouse.
