Black Desert House ft in Architectural Digest
Summary: Experience the architectural masterpiece that is Black Desert House by Homestead Modern, a dramatic desert retreat perched among massive boulders in Yucca Valley’s exclusive Rock Reach community. With panoramic views over a 440-acre private preserve, a heated infinity pool, and a hot tub, this secluded escape blends bold design with the raw beauty of the High Desert.
The Space: One of the most iconic architectural gems in the High Desert is now available for vacation rental for the first time. Placed among boulders as if it landed at night, Oller & Pejic Architecture’s Black Desert House sits on a secluded perch in one of the area’s most exclusive neighborhoods. Overlooking a 440-acre private ranch with landscape that rivals any location in the Joshua Tree National Park, the Black Desert House is a luxury oasis w/ hot tub and heated pool (additional fee to heat pool during cooler months) that remains connected to the elemental rawness of the desert.
Brought to life by Oller & Pejic Architecture, this iconic home presents a contrast between clean, modern lines and the rugged desert landscape. Enter via the gated driveway to find the striking black facade welcoming you. Walk up the stairs to the courtyard featuring a mature olive tree, and let the magic begin.

** Cleaning Protocols *** As the only professional management company in the area, we have always maintained exceptional cleaning standards. We pay above the living wage standards; 100% of your cleaning fee is paid to the cleaners (i.e. no profit to us) and we insist on a professional level of cleaning between guests. We love the High Desert for a lot of reasons - including the open spaces, lack of crowds, and dry weather that we believe make it a safe place to visit.
Guest Access: You will have the entire house and property to yourself.
The Neighborhood: The 320-acre private community of Rock Reach is technically in the Town of Yucca Valley, but it feels like the middle of Joshua Tree National Park – without the crowds. Most of the landscape is an untouched wonderland of weathered boulders, pinon pines, desert oak and juniper trees.
Rock Reach provides the perfect blend of pristine desert and easy access to amenities in town. The West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park is a 20-minute drive away, and the shops, restaurants, and things to do in Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree Village. A few of favorite spots in Joshua Tree Village include Space Cowboy Books, the World Famous Crochet Museum, and the Joshua Tree Saloon.
In addition to shopping and dining, you won’t want to miss these nearby highlights: • Pioneertown (15-minute drive) - Put on your ten-gallon hat and stroll down Mane Street of this Wild West-inspired town, also known for Pappy & Harriet’s, a notable restaurant and venue. • Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum (20-minute drive) - As far from a stuffy gallery as you can imagine, this outdoor sculpture garden contains a unique collection of folk-art. • The Integratron (20-minute drive) - New age-y healing destination with a sound bath, originally designed by ufologist George Van Tassel with the goal of reversing the aging process. • Palm Springs (40-minute drive) - Artsy town known for vintage shopping, art galleries, and the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. • Mt. San Jacinto State Park (90-minute drive) - Expansive, hilly landscape with foot and horseback trails surrounding 10,834-foot Mount San Jacinto.
Of course, let’s not forget about the essentials. Everything you need is within about 10 minutes by car: • Closest supermarket: Vons • Closest liquor store: Star Market & Liquor • Closest pharmacy: Rite Aid Pharmacy • Closest bank: Chase Bank • Closest gas station: Sinclair
Getting Around: While we are off a paved road, many roads in the high desert are dirt, so please take it slow. While a car is required to get around, a four wheel drive car is not, but note that roads will often have ruts, particularly after a rain.
Other Things to Note: • POOL AND HOT TUB HEATING: - Your rental includes heating for the in-ground pool in May and September. - The hot tub is always free to heat. - However, during the cooler months, there are extra charges for pool heating. - If you want the pool heated during these months, please let us know before you arrive.
Extra Charges for Pool Heating: October and April: $200 per night November through March: $300 per night January and February: No heating available
No jumping, diving, running or rough play near the pool and hot tub area. No glass can be around the pool and hot tub, there are plastic cups in the kitchen to be used outside. Please mind the quiet hours (no loud noises after 10pm). No intoxicated persons may use the pool or hot tub. NO LIFEGUARD WILL BE ON DUTY - YOU SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK.
• EVENTS & COMMERCIAL PHOTOSHOOTS: Are not permitted without prior approval, applicable permit and additional fees.
