Yasawa Islands

Leave civilisation far behind and enter a world of sparkling clear waters, spectacular volcanic landscapes and gigantic migrating manta rays.

Formed through volcanic activity millennia ago, the Yasawa Islands are a group of 20 islands located northwest of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu. They are characterised by their rugged volcanic terrain and are surrounded by spectacular coral reefs.

The Yasawas are renowned for their excellent water activities. Some of the best snorkelling sites in Fiji can be found on the coral reefs around the islands in this chain. Popular spots include the bays around Naviti Island as well as the Blue Lagoon. From May to October, you can also swim with the gigantic but gentle manta rays which frequent the channel between the islands of Drawaqa and Nanuya Balavu – a truly awesome experience.

Scuba diving is also a popular activity in the Yasawas. There are some outstanding diving sites on the outer reefs. You can investigate the underwater caves off Nacula Island or weave your way around the volcanic spires that rise from the seabed. Diving courses with qualified instructors are available for those who have not yet experienced this exhilarating activity.

Other water-based activities in the Yasawas include wakeboarding, sea kayaking and jet skiing. Or you can also try out fishing on one of the fishing trips that run from the islands. It is even possible to take your catch back to your resort to have it cooked for your dinner.

For those who prefer to stay on dry land, there are plenty of options. The volcanic terrain of the Yasawas is perfect for hikers. Trek up the hills of Nacula, Waya or Wayasewa for panoramic views of the whole Yasawa archipelago. Or, if relaxation is more your style, sway in a hammock under the shade of palm trees or treat yourself to a massage on the beach.

The Yasawa Islands can be accessed from Viti Levu by way of the Yasawa Flyer catamaran which operates daily from Port Denarau. Visitors should plan to stay for a few days, as it takes the catamaran three to four hours to reach the islands. There are plenty of different types of accommodation to choose from, ranging from luxury resorts to budget dormitory-style accommodation, so the Yasawas are ideal everyone, no matter what their taste or budget.
