With pristine beaches and sparkling lagoons, rolling hills and local villages, Fiji’s Nacula Island is a certain charmer. This lovely island, the third-largest in the Yasawas, is home to some of the finest snorkelling and diving in the country, if not the world. Relax on white sandy beaches or head into the clear azure sea to see all kinds of colourful fish – and maybe even a sea turtle or two.
The waters around Nacula are positively teeming with marine life, and a whole range of activities are on offer for aficionados of aquatic fauna. Many hotels organize small boat charters, which take visitors to ‘secret spots’ like underwater caves farther out in the reef. Dive classes are on offer for those who want to journey into deeper water, with beginner courses available at dive centres and numerous resorts.
Head up into the island’s interior, which is marked by a hilly, volcanic landscape. An extensive network of walking trails criss-cross the island, leading you to peaks that can surpass 200 metres (656 feet) in height. Climb to the summit and enjoy panoramic views of the island and surrounding reefs.
The trails also link the island’s communities together. Make your way to a local village and give high fives to the school kids, who are usually eager to say hello.
Immerse yourself in Nacula Island’s natural beauty and get to know the patterns of daily life by staying on the island for a few days. A range of accommodation is on offer, ranging from camping and backpacker dorms to hotels and upmarket resorts. Close to the village of Nacula you will find Oarsman Bay, a locally owned resort situated on one of the best beaches on the island.
Located some 90 kilometres (55 miles) from Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji, Nacula Island is accessible by seaplane, helicopter, or fast catamaran. Nacula is over 10 kilometres (six miles) long and three kilometres (two miles) wide, making it one of the larger islands in the Yasawa Island group.
