About this property
Hang Your Hat - The Cottage
Styled for visitors seeking a stylish or romantic bolthole, a place to enjoy some relaxation time and from where to visit the delights of Winchester. Perfect for the traveller who wants to relax and chill at the end of the day, a book by a log fire, a glass of wine, or watch the sun go down in the courtyard garden. It's just a short walk to the centre of the city with its award winning restaurants and pubs, nestled around the oldest High Street in England. Close by you have the Cathedral and beautiful walks through the Water Meadows where Keats was inspired to write 'Ode To Autumn'. You have space for dining and for entertaining colleagues and friends, there is a fully equipped kitchen to simply do your own thing, or should you wish our caterers can make any arrangements you need. There is a candle lit steam room to indulge in, gentle underfloor heating with oak and limestone floors, art on the walls, fine linen and robes in the bathroom, a Jetmaster open fire with seasoned logs supplied. There is Wi-Fi for your laptop, or should you wish entertainment with Sky, a comprehensive DVD collection, champagne or wine, and a fine malt in the study, organic free range eggs, all complimentary with your stay. Stroll into the courtyard and the private garden to find the stone, cut over a 1000 years ago, part of a mullioned window of Hyde Abbey, the resting place of King Alfred The Great whose bones are now thought to be buried in the local churchyard of St Bartholomew's.

Cosy comfortable cottage within asking distance to station and town centre. Enjoyed walking to the cathedral and environs. Home away from home. After many weeks of travelling was a pleasure to do some cooking and enjoy the garden outlook. Thanks also for the Prosecco.
Charming, comfortable cottage oasis for exploring Winchester
The Hang Your Hat cottage is a wonderful place to stay if you are visiting Winchester. I spent 5 days here for work and enjoyed it so much. It is conveniently located within an easy walk of the station, shops, and points of interest. The house itself has historical character and also modern conveniences, lots of natural light, a beautiful back garden. Mike was an excellent and caring host - responsive, a great source of tips for things locally to see and do. I would love to return here again the next time that I am visiting Winchester.
Hang your Hat is a great place to stay in Winchester, convenient to local points of interest and shops. It's a quiet location, and Mike is an excellent host. The cottage was well-furnished, clean, and the back garden offered privacy and a nice place to eat on a sunny day.

A classy secret oasis in a beautiful historic town
when we arrived on sunday and was greeted by debbie one of the owners advisers she showed us around the cottage and made sure everything was satisfactory for our stay. The first night we just went to the local inns the mucky duck and hyde tavern both very different but most enjoyable customer service. After a good nights sleep we adventured around lovely winchester a tranquil oasis from everyday life. The cottage was a beautiful well maintained abode with luxury from the start we would recommend the sauna and evenings in the courtyard with your favourite tipple.I would like to thank Nigel for all his help throughout the week and would recommend this property to any travellers looking for a romantic hide a way .
Mike is an accommodating and responsive host. He responded promptly to inquiries and changes of plans on our side. And he left a welcome bottle of bubbly that was quite welcome, as well as good wood that burns excellently in his fireplace. The property is at least as good as the photos, which don’t capture the true charm. The location couldn’t be better. We would return again.
A lot of thought has gone into this cottage. It is well maintained, well equipped & ideally situated for the short walk into the city centre. Mike the owner was very helpful & informative. Parking can be a little pot luck but was not an issue for us.
Will definitely consider a return.
Lovely little cottage with lots of little extras provided including bath robes and prosecco! Great location as walking distance to the centre of Winchester and lots to do in the surrounding area.
Unfortunately we didn't get the weather to enjoy the lovely courtyard garden.
Pretty cottage on first sight it gets better when you go inside, all you will need for your stay, quiet especially in the garden, comfortable, only 10 mins walk from city centre, loads of places eat, many places to visit nearby, would definitely recommend.
Wonderful cottage in the heart of Winchester offering everything you could wish for - relaxing, cosy, comfortable - like a home from home. Would thoroughly recommend.
Lovely touches, squeaky clean and very comfortable. We were exceedingly lucky to have found Mike’s place, it was light and airy, had everything we needed and was within easy walking distance of all that we wanted to do in Winchester. We’ll definitely stay there again when we come back to Winchester!
We were a little wary of going away during the current COVID situation, but the cottage is cosy and full of character, well presented and very welcoming that any concerns dissipated. It is a short meander into the centre Of Winchester, a pretty market town with delightful walks and restaurants.
The absolute icing on the cake for us though was the kitchen and garden. The kitchen has a very plentiful supply of everything you will need to start to relax instantly. The garden is an absolute oasis of calm to sit with morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening.
We will definitely stay here again on our next visit to Winchester.
Fantastic place, everything you could possibly need, magical shower and steam room, huge kitchen with well stocked utensils, plates, pans etc. Lovely patio area and garden with table and chairs to eat, drink and look up at the stars. Definitely a home from home place to stay. Mike the owner was always available if needed and he provided a gas bbq for us as well. Would recommend to stay here.
A quirky little place but certainly not lacking in the home comforts. Lots of nice touches (count the hats!) and thoughtful extras (eggs, milk, fizz, brollies, shopping bags etc). All in all a wonderful place to stay
This is a most beautiful property in Winchester. Close to the train station and easy walking distance into the city. The house has absolutely everything you could need and so much thought has gone into the decor. The back patio/garden is so private and lovely to sit in especially in the evening. The bed was so comfy. The property on arrival was spotless and we managed to park close to the house. I would highly recommend this property and if we are ever in Winchester we will stay in "Hang Your Hat".

Your own spa in a romantic cottage
If you are looking to have a romantic getaway , to reconnect with your partner, or escape from the world to your own love nest, look no further than this cottage. Sharing nights by the roaring fire with your significant other, enjoying the one of a kind steam room and rainforest shower (bring your own eucalyptus oils for a true spa-like experience!), or just drinking wine in the beautiful back garden at night looking up at the stars, there is truly nothing like this. It's cosy, it's romantic - it's like another world.
No detail in the renovation has been spared with heated floors in the kitchen and heated towel rack in the bathroom, to the personal touch of bath robes as comfortable as any four star hotel.
Mike was superb as a host, even providing a bottle a champagne for our engagement celebration. He made some great restaurant suggestions - go and eat at the Chesil Rectory -
brought extra firewood when we'd used it all up (sorry, it was just too good not to light a fire every night!) and even stocked the fridge prior to arrival for essential items (the coffee is amazing, btw). Mike has various hats around the house - make sure to put them on and you'll guarantee to spend the night laughing.
The cottage is within walking distance of the town of Winchester and the meadows where you can go on some great walks along the river and to the top of St Catherine's hill. The kitchen is well appointed with all modern appliances.
The only reason not to give this rental 5 stars is the fear that it will no longer be the "undiscovered treasure" that it is. Come to escape the world and you will leave grounded, connected, refreshed and healed. This is truly a unique find.
