About this property

Muin a Ventu Historical Tower

  • Summary:

Built in the 1100s, Muin a Ventu is one of the last surviving medieval towers in Vernazza, a testament to the village's Genoese heritage. Originally a windmill — the distinctive openings at the top once harnessed the wind to grind grain — the tower was transformed in the 1950s by Amleto, a well-known local figure who added an annex. In the mid-20th century, theatre director Aldo Trionfo restored it, turning it into a bohemian retreat for artists, actors and composers. Today Muin a Ventu still carries that artistic and historical legacy: the tower's silhouette, standing out above Vernazza, has led many visitors to notice its resemblance to the setting of a beloved animated film set in these very villages. A welcome package awaits you with local wine, pasta and pesto, and taggiasca olives — the pasta, pesto and olives come from the same producer as our award-winning olive oil, whose mill can be visited on one of our experiences. Località Preteccia, 90 sqm, sleeps up to 5.

    The Space:

At the base of the tower, a generous open-plan space with a double bed, dining area with an artistic table, kitchenette (fridge, electric hob, Nespresso machine, an antique Ligurian marble sink) and bathroom with shower. The rooms are enriched with original artworks by Giorgio, the sculptor owner, and his wife, a theatre director — including a hand-decorated door in Chinese ink. On the tower's first floor, reached by a wooden ladder, a bedroom with a handcrafted double bed. On the top floor, a single bed with an incomparable view over Vernazza, the sea and the surrounding countryside. Private Mediterranean garden with pergolas, terraces and outdoor dining areas.

    Guest Access:

The path is steep and uneven, requiring good physical fitness. Not recommended for children under 6, elderly guests, or those with mobility difficulties, due to the narrow wooden ladders and the proximity to the cliff edge. Toilet facilities are only on the ground floor.

    The Neighborhood:

At the start of the trail from Vernazza to Corniglia, with panoramic views over the village, the Ligurian Sea and the surrounding hills. Private Mediterranean garden surrounded by lush vegetation.

    Getting Around:

Food delivery service available on request. Public car park above the village for drivers (about 1,200 metres from the pedestrian area), shuttle and a short walk to our office (about 5 minutes).

    Other Things to Note:

We leave a few breakfast basics in the kitchen for your first morning — croissants, biscuits, jam, tea, coffee, portioned powdered milk and sugar. Bed and bath linen included with shower gel, conditioner, body wash and hand soap. Professional cleaning throughout. Concierge office in Vernazza.

Full identity verification is a legal requirement in Italy.

Concierge office in Vernazza open 9:30am–7:00pm from 1 March to 31 October; outside this period the office is closed, with presence available on request. We're always happy to welcome guests staying in any of the other villages too, whether for a quick hello or for advice on local experiences and activities.

This is perhaps one of the most unique properties my family and I have ever had the pleasure of staying in. The accommodation is a medieval tower dating back to 1100 A.D., offering breathtaking panoramic views of the village and the water below.Reaching the tower requires climbing several flights of stairs, but the effort is absolutely worth it. Upon our arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to find fresh focaccia waiting for us. The views are spectacular, and the cool evening breeze made for a comfortable and restful night's sleep. The check-in instructions were clear and detailed, including easy-to-follow directions to the tower. The staff at Cinque Terre Riviera was responsive, accommodating, and quick to assist with any questions or concerns we had throughout our stay. For anyone seeking a truly memorable and unique experience, this medieval tower is an exceptional place to stay.

Magical Tower

This location in Vernazza is truly one of a kind. The hike up to the tower is worth it every time. Porters carried our bags up to the tower which was a wonderful perk. The accommodations were perfect for our 3 nights here. We couldn't get enough of the outside patio and view any time of day. Filled with little Italian trinkets and decor it was very comfortable. Check in and out was very easy. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone.

Exceeded expectations

My family loved staying here. It is in the most iconic, quaint charming place we could possibly stay in Cinque Terre with the most spectacular views. The photos don’t even come close to doing it justice. I’ve already recommended it to all my friends. Note, like most of Cinque Terre, be prepared for stairs, lots and lots of stairs to get here, and ladders. Of course, this is part of the charm we fell in love with.

Top of the world views

A hike to get to, but very worth the views. Accommodations are simple but more than adequate. Beautiful view of the town below. Great city to stay in as it connects both of the trails that are still open.

Remarkable place to stay!

The Muin a Ventu was a remarable place to stay. Lots of historic charm, and the view over Vernazza and the Ligurian sea was beautiful. Especially at sunset. Comfortable bed on the main floor, with great cross breezes (no AC). We stayed for six days in September, with a daytime temperature of 26 and nighttime of 19 - perfect. Two levels of garden. All very casual. The kitchen had enough stuff to function just fine. 132 steps from the main street to the tower, through the town. You have to be ready for up and down in Cinque Terre! The only downside is that the path to Corniglia wraps around the tower, and one of the best views of Vernazza is directly above the garden. So there is an unending flow of hikers right beside and above you. We got used to the multilingual chat about the beautiful view, but we were definitely on display. The property managers in Vernazza (Cinqueterrerentals) were helpful with questions, and helped carry the bags up the first day, to help find the tower.

As unique as it gets

This is a fantastic place for a retreat. It’s a very unique stay and has everything you need for basic comforts. The views are unrivaled and will give you comfort in its own. The only crtitism is that the owner, although not managing the property lives right above you. She was quick to comment on which windows we should and should not have open. Not a big deal, just a bit intrusive and otherwise this is the best locale in Vernazza, by far.
