Climb to the top of Mt. Uetliberg for the most impressive views of Zurich and its surrounds.
Forming part of the Abis chain on the western side of Lake Zurich, Mt. Uetliberg is an attractive tourist destination for visitors and locals alike. Zurich has an awful lot to offer in terms of sightseeing but at 871 metres above sea level, this is one of the best spots to enjoy spectacular views over the city, the lake and the Alps. On the summit, get an even better view by climbing up the observation tower which takes you to an impressive 900 metres above sea level. If heights make you nervous, you should know that the tower tends to sway in the wind! Accessing the summit is easy with regular trains departing from Zurich Hauptbahnhof taking visitors to the terminal station on Uetliberg. From here it’s a mere ten-minute walk to the top where breathtaking views await.Outdoor enthusiasts will be pleased to note that there are several hiking and biking trails that traverse the mountain through a mix of forests and open spaces. If you are feeling particularly energetic, why not challenge yourself on one of the three well-marked hiking routes, all of which take approximately one hour.Hop off at the Albisguetli tram stop to get on the Denzlerweg trail which will take you up to the summit through the forest. Beautifully illuminated at night, the Lanternweg trail also leaves from Albisguetli but takes you on a more westerly trajectory. Finally, the Triemli tram stop leaves you at the start of the Hohensteinweg trail which doubles up as a sledging run in the winter months. At this stage, you have earned a rest so why not stop for some refreshments at the beautiful Uto Kulm restaurant which offers new vistas of the sweeping mountainside. On a good day, the panoramic views from the top of Mt. Uetliberg simply cannot be beaten and its close proximity to the city makes it perfect for a day trip. So pack a picnic, grab your travel pass and go!
