Tourist Guide
Tianjin Eye showing cbd, a river or creek and a city
Northern China’s largest coastal city has a diverse architectural cityscape waiting to be explored. See buildings from the Qing Dynasty and European colonial times through to boldly futuristic designs.

The largest coastal city in northern China, Tianjin is a major seaport filled with fascinating historical areas that can easily be explored on foot. See European buildings from Tianjin’s days as a treaty port as well as stunning Qing Dynasty architecture, all contrasted with ultra-modern high-rises. The city is also graced with large urban parks, which burst into colour during springtime.

Start your day in Tianjin with a delicious breakfast of jianbing, a traditional street food-style crêpe topped with egg, soy sauce and coriander. Then, take a walking tour to discover Tianjin’s colonial architecture in the historic areas of Wu Da Dao, Jiefang Road North and Italian Town.

Step back in time in Ancient Culture Streetand explore the traditional folk-style architecture of the Qing Dynasty. The street features a temple and several stores and galleries selling antiques, calligraphy artworks, ceramics and Chinese musical instruments.

Take to the sky on the Tianjin Eye Ferris wheel and enjoy stunning views of the cityscape from a transparent capsule. The wheel is situated on top of Yongle Bridge over the Hai River and affords views stretching over 40 kilometres (24.8 miles). If you prefer to sightsee closer to the ground, take a cruise on the meandering Hai River and discover the historic Grand Canal.

Stop by the heritage Drum Tower, a Ming Dynasty landmark that was partially destroyed in the cultural revolution of the late 1960s. The tower now contains a bell and several historical exhibitions. Visit the Wanghailou Church, or Our Lady of Victory Church, a magnificent gothic cathedral in Tianjin’s Hebei district.

Tianjin has an international airport and is well connected to the rest of China by rail, bus and ferry services. Bullet train connects Tianjin to Beijing South Train Station. Tianjin’s public transport system is convenient and taxis are plentiful. The area has hot, humid summers and dry winters. The windy springtime is perfect for flying Wei kites, a local folk tradition.

After shortening my trip, I was unfortunately unable to do much sightseeing. However; the area local to my hotel had a lot of restaurant choices and easily accessible to public transport. My next trip will incorporate a longer travel time.
