2. Potsdamer Platz

Potsdamer Platz was once no man’s land. Divided between East and West Berlin, this former busy traffic intersection became a stranded empty space. But after the wall came down, the city wanted a public square which it could be proud of. A design competition was therefore organised. From no man’s land to Europe’s biggest building site, today, Potsdamer Platz (Potsdam Square) is home to modern architecture, business headquarters, retail plazas and wide-open public spaces. 3. Brandenburg Gate

This towering 30-metre-high neoclassical archway in the heart of the city is an iconic feature of Berlin—and it has long played a role in German history. Modelled on the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens, the Brandenburg Gate was built back in 1791 as a symbol of peace standing at the entrance point to the grand boulevard Unter den Linden.

4. Berlin TV Tower

See a bird’s-eye view of of Berlin from Alexanderplatz’s iconic TV Tower (Fernsehturm). The distinctive Berlin landmark reaches 1,207.3 feet (368 meters) into the sky and is the tallest structure in Germany. 5. Friedrichstrasse

Lined by some of Germany’s most exclusive department stores and surrounded by major historical attractions, the Friedrichstrasse cultural and shopping precinct in Berlin’s Mitte district has undergone extreme change since the fall of the Berlin Wall. However, at its center find one of the city’s most unusual tourist attractions, throwing you back into the Cold War era. Friedrichstrasse is today one of Berlin’s most visited streets. It is home to Checkpoint Charlie, one of the very few Cold War border crossings between East and West Berlin.

6. Gendarmenmarkt

Walk through the Gendarmenmarkt and admire some of Berlin’s most attractive architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries. This square features an imposing central statue depicting poet Friedrich Schiller and is overlooked by three landmark Berlin buildings: the French Cathedral, the German Cathedral and the Konzerthaus.
