1. Australia Zoo

Originally opened as a local wildlife sanctuary by the parents of famed “crocodile hunter” Steve Irwin, Australia Zoo has grown over the last 30 years to include animals and exhibits from all over the world as well as one of the world’s biggest wildlife hospitals. The world-famous animal lover, who was killed tragically by a stingray in 2006, grew up feeding and handling crocodiles and turned his talents into a successful worldwide television series. He invested the earnings from his hugely popular show in to turning his parents project into one of the country’s top tourist attractions.

2. Bulcock Beach

This flawless beach, with its picturesque waterfront and views of Bribie Island, is a perfect spot to enjoy the serenity of the Sunshine Coast. Warm waters lead south into the Pumicestone Passage, between the mainland and Bribie Island. The beach is popular with families because of its shallow waters, grassy knolls and seaside picnic areas. Away from the water enjoy the esplanade’s shade, viewing platforms and seats to rest upon.

3. Glasshouse Mountains National Park

For most people of the time, the glass furnace chimneys of 18th-century Yorkshire might have seemed a world away from the rock formations of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. However, they were similar enough in the eyes of Captain James Cook for him to bestow the name Glasshouse Mountains on the volcanic peaks at the centre of this wonderful national park. Formed from the interiors of 26-million-year-old volcanoes, these unique formations have long been a sacred place for the native Aboriginal people in the region. In fact, there are protected sites to this day where spiritual ceremonies still take place.

4. Moreton Island National Park

Just off the Sunshine Coast, 75 minutes by ferry from Brisbane, lies one of Queensland's lesser-known natural wonders: Moreton Island National Park. Pristine beaches, clear waters full of marine life, mangroves full of critters and towering sand dunes combine to make this 37 kilometre-long, vegetated sand island a major tourist draw. People come to fish in Moreton Bay’s bountiful waters, tramp the island's trails and explore its ship wrecks.

Framed by Norfolk pines on a rocky headland, this beach and suburb of the same name is a scenic spot for enjoying ocean views, exploring rock pools with the kids and splashing around in the shallows.
