The region

Monksilver is a quiet village on the eastern edge of Exmoor National Park, tucked between the Brendon Hills and the Quantock Hills in West Somerset.

Despite its name, the silver has nothing to do with precious metal -- it comes from the Latin 'silva', meaning woodland, so the village is really 'Monk's Wood'.

The village has its own welcoming pub, The Notley Arms Inn, which serves award-winning food and local ales. The neighbouring village of Stogumber is two miles away and has a community-run shop and Post Office, while the town of Williton is three miles away with two small supermarkets, a petrol station, cash machines, restaurants, a butcher, pharmacy, and hardware store.

Minehead is approximately ten miles away and has larger supermarkets including Tesco and Morrisons, high street banks, and a broader range of shops. Taunton, the county town of Somerset, is roughly 14 miles south and offers a full range of supermarkets and amenities. Both Tesco and Sainsbury's deliver grocery shopping to this area.

Monksilver sits within Exmoor's International Dark Sky Reserve -- the first in Europe -- making it an outstanding location for stargazing on clear nights. The Brendon Hills, Quantock Hills, and the Somerset coast are all within easy reach by car.

Really enjoyed our stay, very comfortable, clean and very well-equipped for everything. Local info and walking maps too- easy to take a hike - just walk out the door and up the path for great views of the beautiful countryside and the coast ! Great for star-gazing on a clear night- we saw the Milky-way and even a shooting star! It's a great base for exploring the surrounding area and the owners are very friendly. Would be very happy to stay there again :)

Wonderful cottage in a beautiful location. Has everything you need for a comfortable, home from home break away. The owner, Sylvia is such a lovely, kind and caring lady. Nothing is too much trouble and her excellent knowledge of the area was very helpful. We will definitely be returning!

Had a lovely time. Sun even shone for us and I wouldn't be surprised if Shelagh had organised that.

Had a lovely time. Sun even shone for us and I wouldn't be surprised if Shelagh had organised that. Cottage was very comfortable and lots of walks on our doorstep and nearby. We had meals out most evenings, twice at the local - excellent.

Comfortable, quiet and superbly equipped property. Very friendly proprietor. Many walks on the doorstep. Local hostelry friendly but offers fine dining at appropriate prices and does not offer meals every evening. When we were there dinner was not available on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings.

A very warm welcome from Shelagh. The house is very well furnished and equipped, and had everything we needed for our 4 day stay. Set in a in quiet picturesque village it was ideal. There is a pub 2 mins away, Noteley Arms, but do not recommend it. £17 for a burger and fries that was too salty to finish. Ask Shelagh where else you could eat locally. Would definitely recommend Bridlecott.

The place is large enough for 4 people, very comfortable, nice big master bedroom. Everything you might need to cook your own meals is present. Very nice and helpfull owner! Loved talking to her! Very short walk to the local Notley Arms, which is always good to visit! Monksilver is an ideal little village to spend time, talk to the locals, have a wee walk, have a strong cider at the Notley's, discover the church's history and the grave of a mother and her daughter that were murdered over a century ago,... We'll definitely be back!
