This close, friendly community is engulfed by wilderness and dramatic landscapes, making it a draw for lovers of culture and adventure.

Immerse yourself in the deep-rooted heritage of agriculture and art in Tamworth. Hike through dense forests where you can spot deer and beaver and swim in glassy glacial lakes in the shadow of immense mountains.

Completely surrounded by nature, Tamworth’s residents are proud of their town and are always happy to show it off to visitors. A stroll from one side to the other along Main Street is a modest exertion that will lead you past the Arts Council of Tamworth. View its exhibits covering a vast spectrum of genres, with classical Early American paintings and contemporary pieces. Check out the workshops that take place here offering activities such as jazz, ballet and circus skills.

The final stop on quiet Cleveland Hill Road to the south is Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm. This traditional 19th-century farmstead is a charming step back in time, with pigs, sheep and goats to feed and cows to be milked. Learn how to cook over an old woodstove or participate in spinning and sewing. Before you leave, look around the post-Revolution farmhouse. Inside are beautiful antique toys and furnishings, as well as murals by artist John Avery.

Make the 10-minute drive southeast to White Lake State Park. Plunge into the clear, refreshing water and enjoy a stroll on the footpath around the lake. See loons paddling beside their young and listen for the scratching sounds of beavers hard at work.

During the colder months, cover the same stretch on cross-country skis. Additional winter facilities are available just north on the banks of Chocorua Lake. Fish for trout while enjoying a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains.

Tamworth is in Carrol County, just over a 1-hour drive north of the state capital of Concord. Tamworth itself has only a few guesthouses, with more options in nearby villages of Whittier, Chocorua and Wonalancet. Come here for the annual Fourth of July celebrations with music, homemade food and a superb firework display in the evening.

"Perfect hotel for guests traveling with children! Nice, clean room, indoor and outdoor pools, playground, pickleball, and movie theater. The breakfast buffet was a little pricey but good.
