It is based on a small peninsula on the east coast of the Balkan Peninsula and the Adriatic Sea. Split is Croatia's second largest city (after Zagreb). The Cathedral Saint Domnius (Sveti Duje) at Split is regarded as the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world. It was built in the year 305 as the Mausoleum of the Roman emperor Diocletian. The bell tower is from the 12th century.
