The best area to stay in Southside is the Downtown Historic District, particularly around Main Street and Court Street.

This neighbourhood is the heart of Southside and offers a pleasant mix of historic architecture, local businesses, and easy access to the riverfront. It's very walkable, with many of the town's original buildings now housing independent shops, restaurants, and cafes. The Southside Riverwalk, offering scenic views of the river, runs directly alongside this area.

Couples looking for a relaxing getaway will find the Downtown Historic District particularly appealing. You can enjoy strolls along the river, browse local art galleries, and have dinner at one of the many cosy restaurants without needing to drive. The historic charm and convenient layout make it ideal for a leisurely trip.

For travellers interested in outdoor activities and a slightly more secluded setting, the areas just outside the Downtown Historic District, closer to the Southside State Park, are a good option.

For most visitors, the best time to go to Southside is during the late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September to October) months. These periods offer pleasant weather conditions ideal for exploring the area's natural beauty and outdoor activities.

Late spring sees temperatures ranging from comfortable to warm, typically between 15°C and 25°C. The foliage is lush, and the rivers are often at good levels for water sports. This is an excellent time for couples looking to enjoy scenic hikes and kayaking without the peak summer crowds.

Early autumn brings crisp, clear days with temperatures generally between 10°C and 20°C. The region is renowned for its spectacular fall colours, particularly along the New River Gorge, making it a prime time for photography and scenic drives.
