Enjoy a traditional Bahamian experience at this small settlement, the site of a much-loved weekly fish fry.

Smith’s Point is the location of a popular Wednesday night fish fry, during which several beachfront shacks fry seafood favourites over oil-drum cookers. Socialize with locals, dine on genuine Bahamian cuisine and soak up the festive atmosphere.

The settlement takes its name from Michael Smith, who served as commissioner of the island in the early 19th century. Look for a sign at the town’s entrance that reads "Smith's Point –Bahamian Village," a reflection of the town’s dedication to preserving its authentic atmosphere. This unassuming little settlement features a tranquil beach bordered by pines and palm trees. Find a number of food shacks along the shore where you can enjoy a meal any night of the week. The atmosphere is usually quiet on nights without the fish fry special.

The town’s normally sleepy atmosphere changes significantly on Wednesdays, when it hosts the colourful fish fry. The fish fry was originally started to raise money for building a local church, but the town decided to continue the event after it proved to be overwhelmingly popular. Join locals and tourists from across the island and line up for plates of lobster, snapper, grouper, turbot and other fresh seafood, all barbecued or fried Bahamian style.

Most of the beachfront shacks serve the same menu, so you can find a spot wherever there’s an available seat. Try a conch salad accompanied by a local Kalik beer or a refreshing rum punch. The atmosphere becomes even livelier later in the night, when live bands begin playing music ranging from reggae to calypso and diners dance along.

Smith Point is adjacent to Taino Beach, where you’ll find a pleasant public park. A favourite of locals and visitors, this park has a children’s playground and a few scenic sitting areas. Follow the trail winding through the park’s nature preserve and bird sanctuary and look for signs highlighting native Bahamian vegetation.

Find Smith’s Point 3 miles (5 kilometres) from downtown Freeport. Use local taxi services to get here. If you drive, take the highway east of Port Lucaya.
