Yamanaka Onsen Shirasagiyu Tawaraya

8/10 Good
"Delightful hotel, not easy to find though, just know its along the river! Very old fashioned but superbly maintained and its part of the charm. Onsen was fabulous, staff were all ultra accommodating. Organised a massage in my room, incredible. Shout out to Yoko, who looked after me at mealtimes, shes a star!"

Onyado Yuinosho

10/10 Excellent
"This is very much an onsen experience with built in breakfast and dinner. It forces you to slow down, which is exactly what you need. The breakfast and dinner timings can be a little prescriptive but understandable given that all guests must be accommodated. The onsen is beautiful and the overall setting is beautiful. The pick up/drop service from the local bus stand is a wonderful perk."

APA Hotel & Resort Kaga Katayamazu Onsen Kasuikyo

10/10 Excellent
"Stayed in a Japanese style room with tatami floor, and side room with 2 beds. Very spacious and nice view of little garden. Chose half board and the Japanese style dinner was very tasty, served in traditional partitioned areas for semi-private dining. Similar to a tasting menu with lots of small dishes and courses. Onsen area was lovely and relaxing. Indoor and outdoor onsen plus sauna."

"The place is great but i could not use the bath due to my tattoos. Also the room we stayed in was a smoking room when we paid for non-smoking. There is not a lot to do around the hotel unless you get a bus to another town. Breakfast was a very traditional Japanese breakfast."

Staying in a ryokan here allows for a complete immersion in the onsen culture, with many establishments offering kaiseki dinners using local ingredients. The focus is on relaxation, enjoying the natural hot springs, and the peaceful mountain setting. For travellers interested in local craft and culture, staying in the village provides easy access to the Shiramine Historical and Folk Museum. Here, you can learn about the area's unique history and traditional crafts, such as the local paper-making technique.
When is the best time to go to Shiramine Onsen?
The best time to visit Shiramine Onsen is during the colder months, from late autumn to early spring, to fully appreciate the onsen experience and the surrounding natural beauty. The primary reason to visit Shiramine Onsen is, of course, the hot springs. During winter, the contrast between the warm, mineral-rich waters and the crisp, often snowy, outdoor air is particularly invigorating. Imagine soaking in an open-air bath while snowflakes gently fall around you – it's a truly memorable experience. The village itself takes on a picturesque quality with snow-covered roofs and trees.Beyond the onsen, these months offer opportunities for winter sports enthusiasts. The Hakusan mountain range, which Shiramine Onsen is located within, becomes a haven for skiing and snowboarding. Several resorts are easily accessible from the village, making it a superb base for those looking to combine a day on the slopes with a relaxing evening soak. For those who prefer a slightly milder chill, late autumn (October to November) is also an excellent choice. The surrounding forests display stunning autumn foliage, painting the Hakusan area in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows.
