Highlands offers a luxurious retreat with spacious apartments boasting oak furniture and leather sofas. Enjoy panoramic sea, town, and countryside views from the property's communal gardens or private balconies like apartment 4’s rooftop conservatory.
Highlands takes its name from the imposing Victorian residence that stood on the cliff top site for over 100 years. Originally built for the Lord Mayor of London, Sir James Thomson Ritchie, and subsequently used by Reverend William Page Roberts, Bishop of Salisbury, for his final years, it was later owned by the McAuslane family, who turned it into a well known hotel. After its closure, it was then used by Upper Chine School for its final years.
After being left for a decade, the current Highlands was then constructed, a grand and impressive mock Georgian manor house that lived up to its predecessor in terms of scale and views across Shanklin. However, it was never finished and derelict, open to the elements, for a decade. Now, after an extensive refurbishment and conversion, it is now restored into 5 spacious, luxurious apartments.
Each of the apartments offer their own quirks and special features, from the penthouse’s unique roof top conservatory and balcony with its fantastic views to the annexe’s duplex apartment, the property is spread across four levels from the garden to the penthouse with annexe to side. The property benefits from spectacular panoramic sea, town and countryside views around the building, going across to Sandown Bay, Shanklin town and the Downs towards Ventnor.
All of the apartments benefit from oak furniture and leather sofas, oak floored living areas with fitted kitchens with granite worktops and all your key appliances, 32" LED TV with Freesat and DVD and free wifi. Communal gardens are available for all apartments to enjoy with seating available alongside off road parking and cycle parking bays.
For apartment 4, the property is a second floor loft penthouse apartment accessed via communal area on first floor with double and single bedrooms. There is a bathroom, kitchen/dinner and conservatory on roof living area with private balcony with views over Sandown Bay. We are able to provide a travel cot with linen and high chair for your stay at no extra charge. Apartments 1, 2, 3 and 5 are also available to book individually or in any combination for larger groups.
The property is found on the coastal path between Shanklin and Sandown and just down the road from National Trust land and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is also a few minutes walk from the picturesque Old Village and its thatched cottages, plus shops, pubs, restaurants and the main town, as well as the cliff top, Esplanade and Shanklin’s beaches.
Discounts or special rates on all car and foot passenger ferry and hover routes are available, so please get in touch after booking for details.

Beautiful apartment- very clean and spacious for our family of 3. Adequately equipped kitchen. Lovely clean and fresh bedding. The sea view and balcony were a treat. Please cut the top out of the garden trees so the sea view is better!
Parking off road was a bonus.
Very impressed on arrival. Disappointed by 4 place setting of cutlery and crockery. It needs doubling so that the dishwasher can be used less often. This would save on energy costs.
Everything worked well, with all that we could need for a week's holiday.
The apartment is very conveniently placed for exploring the town and rest of the island. We used the train into Ryde and the bus back from Ventnor after walking there on the coast path.
It's a shame the sea view from the balcony is obscured by the trees, but would have no hesitation on returning to this lovely property.
The experience was very enjoyable. The apartment had everything we needed. Big enough for the 3 of us. It was very clean and well maintained. My only negative would be the WiFi, the signal kept dropping and having a teenager without WiFi can be problematic. But overall a great place to stay and would stay again
Fantastic, modern, very well appointed apartment with lovely balcony for those nicer days. Only downside is it's on the third floor, so lots of stairs, but the views make it worth it. Very convenient for bus line 3 too if you don't fancy driving. Good location for walking into Shanklin Old Village and also getting around the island (approx. 20 minutes to Newport (in November at least!). Very good communication with the owners and 20% discount on the ferry too through them.
We had a very nice holiday while staying at the Highlands in Shanklin on the IOW in September 2021. Would happily recommend this location to family and friends and plan to return in the neat future
My stay in Apartment 4 at 'Highlands' was lovely, and once the staircases up to the top floor have been over overcome, there is a great panoramic view of Shanklin.
Located in the quaint older part of the coastal town, there are many excellent walks accessible from this very well-maintained property.
Adam was also very helpful and prompt when dealing with every aspect of my booking and relaxing two-week visit.
I would certainly recommend an idyllic escape on the Isle of Wight, and a rejuvenating stay at this excellent property.
Thank you!
