The sheer size and extravagant architecture of the third-largest cathedral in the world are enough to take your breath away.

Commissioned in the early 1400s to demonstrate the vast wealth and power of the city of Seville, this enormous cathedral stands 42 metres high, covers an area of 11,520 square metres and is a lavish showcase of Gothic architecture. One of the cathedral’s finest examples of the Gothic style is the immense retablo which is located in the main nave of the cathedral. Make your way to this impressive altarpiece to see a shimmering wall of gilded sculptures of scenes from the life of Christ.

As well as Gothic architecture, Seville Cathedral also displays other influences. The cathedral stands on the site of an Almohad mosque, the architectural remains of which can be seen in two sections of the building – the Patio de los Naranjos (Orange Tree Courtyard) and the Giralda (a minaret which has been converted into a bell tower). Admire this Almohad architecture by taking a leisurely walk in the shade of the orange trees on the Patio de los Naranjos, or climb to the top of the Giralda for panoramic views across Seville.

Apart from its architectural attractions, there are also other elements to the cathedral that visitors should not miss. The two main sacristies house some of the cathedral’s most exciting treasures. In the Sacristía Mayor, you can marvel at the huge silver monstrance which was crafted in the 1580s by metalsmith Juan de Arfe, and in the Sacristía de los Cálices, you can see Francisco de Goya’s famous 1817 painting of the Seville martyrs, Saints Justa and Rufina.

Close to the main entrance of the cathedral, you will also find the burial place of famous explorer Christopher Columbus. This impressive tomb is held in the air by the statues of four kings representing the four kingdoms that formed Spain at the end of the 15th century.

Situated in the historic district of Seville, the Old Town, the cathedral is open to the public every day, with shorter opening hours on Sundays. There is a small admission fee and audio guides are available to hire.
