This impressive building has played a vital role in local politics stretching back to the 14th century.

Sedile Dominova is the last surviving ancient noble seat in the Campania region of Italy. These buildings date back to the 14th century and were used for gatherings of local noblemen, who would meet to discuss the burning political issues of the day, as well as local administrative affairs and other aspects of community life. The custom had its origins in the Middle Ages, with membership of the institutions being strictly limited to noblemen.Sorrento’s surviving ancient noble seat, Sedile Dominova, is situated in one of the narrow lanes off the Piazza Tasso. It is still used occasionally for meetings and gatherings, and is now the headquarters of a workers’ association. The building’s popularity as a visitor attraction means it is often crowded with tour groups, but it’s worth waiting for a quieter period when you can appreciate the many impressive architectural features without interruption. Entering through the decorated gate, pause to admire the city’s coat of arms supported by angels, before stepping inside the foyer to view the well-preserved collection of frescoes in the loggia, which dates from the 16th century. Many of the decorations on the pillars are reproductions of the original designs, which have been lost through the years. Nevertheless, they give a striking impression of the past glories of this lavishly embellished loggia. Inside the dome you can still see the heraldic signs of the noblemen who belonged to the ancient seat.In the atrium you will often find small groups of men from the local workers’ association playing cards or exchanging news. Here you can sit down at a table and read your guidebook, as long as there is no official meeting taking place. It’s a privilege to imagine yourself following in the footsteps of an illustrious line of local citizens stretching back through the centuries.Sedile Dominova is on a corner of Via San Cesareo, a short walk from Piazza Tasso and the cathedral, and admission is free of charge. As the street is so narrow here, it is necessary to walk down one of the adjacent lanes to get a good look at the exterior of the dome, which is beautifully decorated with brightly coloured majolica tiles.
