"The view was spectacular! Easy check in and out. Very responsive hosts! Very spacious for 4 adults. Close to the beach and hiking trails. We highly recommend!"
"Tout était parfait : l’emplacement, les installations, le personnel, la chambre. Seul hic : il n’y a pas de chauffage, donc par temps frais (ce qui était notre cas en mai), la chambre est humide et un peu inconfortable. On nous a donné un édredon supplémentaire, mais ça ne changeait rien à l’air ambiant. Une petite chaufferette d’appoint aurait été appréciée."
Enchanting view from the balcony of beautifully restored "Adega Baia do Canto".
10/10 Excellent
"Enjoy this moment of time with views of the ocean and the rectangular, hand built vineyard plots that represent generations of individual farmers who stacked these stones one by one without mortar. Revel in the eerie delightful sounds of the Cory’s Shearwaters come home each night to nest in the rocky cliffs. Pico has its own pace and this Adega creates a sense of belonging - no matter how far you’ve traveled - because it’s innately Pico. "

"Quiet, beautiful comfortable space. Piedade is a gem, and the house was modern, cozy and provided all we needed for our stay. Isa is great, accomodating and kind and I appreciated her knowledge and warm personality. Pico deserves extra time to explore, it has hidden surprises and I'll definitely visit again and book the same place. Thank you Isa! "
Adega Velha holiday home, next to the sea and mountains, ideal for couples
10/10 Excellent
"Adega Velha is a wonderful place to escape to and enjoy the island of Pico. Hosts Fátima and Helio were so welcoming and helpful. Morning coffee on the patio with great ocean views, swimming in the ocean, hiking….lasting memories. Thank you!"
"We enjoyed the three days we stayed at Casa Baía de Feteira. The house was well stocked with towels and kitchen supplies and the welcome basket was a nice touch. Note Google maps does not take you to the driveway when using the “directions” feature within the vrbo app but rather a nearby location. This was easily and quickly corrected by a note to the host. "
The best area to stay in Santo Antão is Ribeira Grande, particularly the town of Ponta do Sol, for its accessibility and amenities.
Ponta do Sol is the main port of entry for the island and offers the most developed infrastructure. It's a small, colourful town with a relaxed pace, featuring a charming harbour, local restaurants, and guesthouses. The town is built on a hillside, so be prepared for some inclines, but it provides lovely views of the ocean. It's also the starting point for many of the island's renowned hiking trails.
For those looking for a base for hiking and exploring, Ponta do Sol is an excellent choice. Its location means you can easily access popular trails like the one to Fontainhas, a picturesque village clinging to the cliffs. You'll find tour operators and guides readily available here to help plan your adventures.
Couples often appreciate the laid-back atmosphere and the convenience of having various dining options and services within walking distance.
When is the best time to go to Santo Antão?
The best time to go to Santo Antão is during the dry season, which runs from April to October.
During these months, you'll experience consistently sunny weather and comfortable temperatures, superb for exploring the island's dramatic landscapes. This period also generally has the calmest seas, making ferry travel between islands smoother and more predictable.
This timing is particularly ideal for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. The trails, such as those around the Paúl Valley or leading to the Cova de Paúl crater, are less muddy and more accessible. Clear skies offer uninterrupted views of the island's peaks and valleys, which is a significant draw for those seeking an active holiday.
For those interested in a more relaxed pace, perhaps enjoying the island's local culture and cuisine, the dry season still offers pleasant conditions for leisurely strolls through villages like Ponta do Sol or Ribeira Grande.
