Pilgrims come from all over the world to visit this well-decorated religious complex and to see its main attraction, a 17th-century painting by an Angolan slave that miraculously survived a devastating earthquake.

A hub of spirituality in the heart of the city, the Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas is a tranquil religious complex that is home to a church, a monastery and a fascinating old painting that attracts pilgrims from all over the world. After your visit, take a walk around the lively neighbourhood that surrounds the sanctuary, replete with street vendors and outdoor performers.

Pause in front of the Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas and look up at the baroque façade of the church. With gold columns, ornate decoration, and a Peruvian flag next to two black-and-white strips of material, this is one impressive frontage. Built in 1771, the church is dedicated to the Señor de los Milagros (the Lord of Miracles), said to be the patron of Lima. Visit in October to see the procession of the Lord of Miracles, when the church’s halls are filled with purple incense burners.

Head inside and seek out the various altars that are dedicated to Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Look up at the tasteful central dome in the church’s roof. The main attraction in the complex, however, is an oil painting of the crucifixion of Jesus. This artwork was painted by an Angolan slave some 400 years ago.

Explore the lively street located right next to the sanctuary. This thoroughfare, known as the Jirón Huancavelica, is decorated according to a religious theme. Tarot card readers, artefact vendors, and purveyors of street food will compete for your attention. Make sure to try some of the local delicacies, which include honey nougat fig and a donut-shaped sweet potato snack by the name of picaron.

The Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas is just south of the Rímac River in the Tacna district of Lima. The site is a few blocks’ walk from the central historical district, and it is easily accessible by public transport. Head towards the Castilla Bus Stop or the Montserrate Railway Station, depending on your choice of transit. The sanctuary is open to the public from dawn until noon, and from afternoon until evening.
