Gîte de la Basse Porte

A charming, authentic, traditional 19th-century farmhouse, built against former stables and meticulously restored, perched on a south-east facing hillside, bordering a narrow lane, just steps from the center of a picturesque little market village with old-world charm. Enjoy tranquility in the heart of the unspoiled Morvan countryside, nestled on the slopes of the famous Mont Beuvray, an 821m viewpoint offering extraordinary views (as far as Mont Blanc!). Its summit is occupied by the renowned oppidum of Bibracte, an ancient fortified Gallic town, one of the best preserved, with its ramparts and districts extending over 200 hectares (designated a "Grand Site de France"). Perched on a sunny plateau, in the heart of a remarkable protected site (ZNIEFF & Natura 2000 Zone), bordering the verdant Méchet Valley and the Haut Folin, the highest peak in Burgundy (901m), the village enjoys a magnificent, unspoiled rural setting in the gentle mountains. This very comfortable cottage boasts a warm, rustic charm with contemporary touches, enhanced by the character of a historic home (stone fireplace mantel, exposed beams, stone walls with a manger and hay rack). Full of charm, it's cozy and comfortable. A large, sunny balcony-terrace opens onto a pleasant enclosed garden, overlooked by a spacious panoramic terrace offering beautiful, unobstructed views of the surrounding countryside. Composition: Detached house with outbuilding. The cottage is on two levels (accessed via an external staircase). Wi-Fi (fiber optic). Electric heating + wood-burning stove. First floor: living room/kitchen/lounge, shower room, separate WC. 2nd floor: 3 bedrooms (one with a 160x200cm double bed and the other with four 80x190cm single beds arranged in two sets of two pull-out beds), including one independent annex with external access (160x200cm double bed) and a private shower room (shower/WC). Enclosed garden (100m²) + balcony-terrace + terrace + electric car charging station + private parking space (1 space). Ample free public parking on site. Amenities including a supermarket are 10 km away. Stay in the heart of the Morvan Natural Park in the footsteps of Vercingetorix & Caesar! Charming authentic Morvan farmhouse with character dating from the 19th century attached to an old "stable" annex, both carefully restored - with a pleasant enclosed garden with panoramic terrace - located in the quiet heart of the picturesque village of Saint-Léger-sous-Beuvray (small shops on site), 6 km from the prestigious Gallo-Roman archaeological site of Bibracte labeled "Grand Site de France" & 10 km from the market town of Etang-sur-Arroux (numerous amenities including supermarket). Superb rural & natural surroundings perfectly preserved gentle mountain setting, combining vast hedgerows, rivers, ponds & deep wild forests, nestled on the slopes of the famous Mont-Beuvray (magnificent forest site classified & protected in "Natura 2000 Zone" & ZNIEFF for its rich ecosystems) on the southern slope of the Morvan massif. An ultra-privileged location on the routes of numerous marked footpaths in "green walks" (a very extensive network of similar hiking trails to be explored on foot or by mountain bike in the area), the "Cycloroute71" (Tour of Saône-et-Loire by bike), the legendary GTMC mountain bike circuit (Grande Traversée du Massif Central) as well as the renowned GRP of the "Grand Tour du Morvan" (connected to the GR13 & GR 131), 12 km from the Romanesque churches circuit, 17 km from a marked cycling & mountain biking route ("Itinérance verte Autunois-Morvan"), 21 km from the "Morvan to Vineyards" Green Way and about forty km from the first vineyards of the Couchois (Côtes Chalonnaises / adjoining the famous Côtes de Beaune & Hautes Côtes de Beaune) & the "Route des Grands Vins" extended by the illustrious "Route des Grands Crus" (passing through the mythical wine villages of Puligny-Montrachet, Pommard, Meursault…). Prime location in the heart of the Autunois-Morvan, a sublime territory steeped in history, traditions, legends & mysteries, rich in a very rare historical heritage (ancient, medieval, industrial...) as well as magnificent landscapes, at the crossroads of the Nièvre (territory of the "Great Lakes of the Morvan") & the Côte d'Or. Ideally located for exploring the region: 19 km from Autun (a designated "City of Art & History" with 2,000 years of human presence), 23 km from the famous Paldenshangpa Buddhist temple, 28 km from Château-Chinon, 29 km from the starting point of the "Vélorail du Morvan" (a unique 22 km railbike ride through nature), 34 km from Le Creusot (home to the renowned Combes amusement park and the Creusot TGV train station, 42 km away), 38 km from the famous Lac des Settons (with its supervised sandy beach, water sports center, and numerous aquatic activities), and 48 km from the medieval village of Nolay. A comfortable and charming retreat nestled close to local shops, perfect for a relaxing getaway with your small family!

What's nearby

  • Vézelay Abbey or Abbaye Sainte-Marie-Madeleine de Vézelay is a Benedictine and Cluniac monastery in Vézelay in the Yonne department in northern Burgundy, France. The Benedictine abbey church, now the Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, with its complicated program of imagery in sculpted capitals and portals, is one of the outstanding masterpieces of Burgundian Romanesque art and architecture. Sacked by the Huguenots in 1569, the building suffered neglect in the 17th and the 18th centuries and some further damage during the period of the French Revolution.

The church and hill at Vézelay were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979.
