Climb aboard the largest surviving stern-wheeler boat in British Columbia and explore the marine museum located on its restored upper decks.

The S.S. Sicamous Inland Marine Museum is a fascinating trove of BC history situated within the much-loved steamship of Okanagan Lake. Between 1914 and 1936, the pretty stern-wheeler carried passengers and cargo to remote townships along the lakeside, connecting the communities before motorways were built. Check out a large scale model of the Kettle Valley Railway on the cargo deck and make your way to the upper deck to admire the boat’s beautifully restored interior.

As you walk toward the S.S. Sicamous Heritage Park, you’ll see the elegant five-decked vessel appearing as though it is about to depart for the still waters of Okanagan Lake. Admire the pretty red-and-white painted boat, which is now beached on the grassy lakeshore. At the ship’s stern see the immense paddle wheel that powered the journeys up and down the long lake.

Enter the lower decks via the ramp that leads directly into the ship’s cargo hold. The first thing you will see is the model railway, which weaves around the entire cargo deck. The Penticton Kettle Valley Model Railway Club tends to this faithful miniature replica. Watch the tiny train navigate the tunnels and mountains of miniaturized Kettle Valley scenery.

Peruse the historic photographs and informative displays that line the lower decks. Learn about Penticton and the Okanagan Lake during the early 20th century and imagine how day-to-day life would have been for the passengers on the S.S. Sicamous. Take the stairs or the elevator to see the elegantly restored upper decks, where you’ll find more marine heritage displays, charming period salons and a ballroom. Look out over the lake harbor from the ship’s bow and enjoy expansive views across the water to the surrounding mountain ranges.

The S.S. Sicamous is located on the lakeshore northwest of Penticton, approximately a 20-minute walk along the pretty lake beach from historic downtown. The cost of admission includes a self-guided tour of the upper and lower decks. Discounts are available for children, seniors and families. The museum is open on weekends for most months of the year, but call ahead to confirm if your dates are available.
