The best area to stay in Rukuma is the area surrounding Lake Rukuma, particularly along its northern and eastern shores.

This region is the primary draw for visitors, offering stunning lake views and direct access to various water activities. The area isn't a traditional town centre, but rather a collection of lodges and guesthouses spread out along the lakeside, providing a tranquil and scenic environment. It's known for its beautiful sunrises over the water and the opportunity to observe local birdlife.

Couples often find this area ideal for a romantic and peaceful retreat. Many lodges offer private balconies overlooking the lake, opportunities for boat trips, and dining experiences with a view. It's a great spot for unwinding and enjoying nature together.

For travellers interested in nature and outdoor pursuits, the lakeside area is perfect. Activities like kayaking, fishing, and guided nature walks are readily available.

The best time to go to Rukuma is during the dry seasons, which run from June to September and again from December to February.

These periods offer the most pleasant weather for exploring, with less rainfall and clearer skies, making outdoor activities and travel around the region much more comfortable. The temperatures are generally mild, avoiding the heavier rains that can make some roads less accessible and outdoor experiences less enjoyable.

For those planning to visit the nearby national parks, such as Nyungwe Forest National Park for chimpanzee trekking, the dry season significantly improves trail conditions and increases the chances of spotting wildlife. Couples looking for an active holiday with hiking and wildlife viewing will find these months ideal.

Conversely, the wet seasons, from March to May and October to November, bring heavier rainfall.
