About this property
Windmill Basement Suite | Bright Studio with King Bed & Handcrafted Details
- Please note: This listing is for the separate Windmill Basement Suite, not The Impossible Dream windmill guesthouse above it. The suite has its own private entrance at the base of the windmill and is a completely separate studio living space.
I built the basement specifically for The Impossible Dream, and when the windmill was rescued from Dead Man’s Flats, it was carefully moved onto this new foundation. So while you are staying in the basement suite, you are quite literally staying at the base of the windmill and becoming part of its story.
One of the things guests often wonder about is sound between the two spaces. The suite and the windmill guesthouse are separated by a 5-inch concrete slab, providing very good sound insulation between the two living spaces. While no shared building can be completely soundproof, the substantial concrete separation helps create a quiet and comfortable stay.
Although it is a basement suite, it is not a typical dark, below-ground basement. The suite is partially above grade, with windows positioned above ground level and plenty of natural light. There are no window wells, so the space feels bright and welcoming throughout the day.
The studio has a comfortable king-size bed, along with in-floor heating to keep your feet warm and the space cozy.
The centrepiece of the room is a large plastered tree that grows from the floor all the way to the ceiling, where its branches spread across the ceiling above you. Other plastered trees support the generous European beechwood countertops, adding warmth and an unmistakable handcrafted character to the space.
The bathroom features a beautiful custom tadelakt shower, created using an ancient Moroccan plastering technique that produces a smooth, seamless finish.
This is a space filled with natural materials, unusual details, and craftsmanship. It offers a different way to experience The Impossible Dream and the story of how this remarkable windmill found a new home in Rosebud.
Rosebud is a quiet hamlet of about 100 people, tucked into the beautiful Rosebud River Valley. From here, you can enjoy professional live theatre, local art, gift shops, cafés, and the peaceful surroundings of the valley.
The suite is approximately 25 minutes from Drumheller, 30 minutes from the Royal Tyrrell Museum, and one hour from Calgary International Airport.
