Rasnov Fortress

This small town is best known for its impressive hilltop fortress, which dates back to the 14th century.

Unassuming Râşnov is dominated by its picturesque medieval fortress, built in the early 1300s to protect Râşnov and the nearby villages from outside invasions. Whenever the town was attacked, citizens gathered their belongings and took shelter in this massive fortress. Explore the fascinating fortress grounds, see the town’s modern dinosaur park and admire the pretty central square.

Set on top of a hill with a Hollywood-like entrance sign, Râşnov Fortress is the first stop for most visitors. Wander among the remains of more than 30 centuries-old dwellings, including chapels, schools and homes, many of which have been converted into shops selling local crafts and art. Practice your aim at the Archery Club and take in the fantastic views over the surrounding plains and mountains from the top of the fortress.

Opened in 2015, Dino Parc Râşnov is one of the largest dinosaur parks in southeast Europe. Enter the park under a huge dinosaur and walk along a wooded hiking trail that follows the evolution of dinosaurs. Along the trail, discover 45 life-sized dinosaurs built from fiberglass. The 3.5-acre (1.4-hectare) park also includes a 9-D movie theater, children’s playgrounds and tree houses.

Near the city’s Main Square is the Evangelical Church, which dates back to the 14th century. Step inside to see the church’s beautiful 16th-century mural paintings. Visit the city’s Info Turist Centre (tourist information center) near the main square. Ask staff about the city they will be happy to provide recommendations for attractions and accommodations.

Located about 6 miles (10 kilometers) outside Râşnov’s town center, the Rasnoavei Gorges offer a popular destination for extreme sports enthusiasts. Head to these limestone cliffs to try bungee jumping, rock climbing or driving ATVs.

To get to Râşnov, ride one of the regular minibuses departing from Braşov, which is 11 miles (18 kilometers) southwest. If you’re coming by car, head south of Braşov toward Pitesti and Rucar. Enjoy your visit to this laid-back, historic town.
