With beaches, tours, and a lively nightlife, the St. Tropez of South America is a veritable hive of holiday activity.
Originally a fishing port, Punta del Este sits on a peninsula that lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Rio de la Plata (River Plate). Today it is known primarily for its gorgeous beaches, its lively marina, and its popularity among celebrities. Relax on the sand, try your hand at various water sports, then sample Punta del Este’s happening nightlife.
The town is bookended by miles of lovely beaches, which stretch both east and west from the peninsula. Head to Playa Mansa, where the calm water of the Rio de la Plata lends itself to swimming as well as such activities as waterskiing and windsurfing. Dine at one of the beach clubs here. Meanwhile, the waterslides of the Splash Aqua Park are a sure-fire hit with the kids.
Over on the Atlantic coast you will find Playa Brava, a well-fancied surf beach backed by sand dunes. Make sure you see the famous sculpture La Mano, which takes the shape of a huge hand emerging from the sand.
Back in town, browse high-end brand outlets along the Calle 20 or explore the handicraft market on Avenida Gorlero. Climb up the lighthouse and you will be rewarded with panoramic views of Punta del Este, its peninsula, and the coastline beyond.
Make your way down to the waterfront promenade and mosey along to the port. Here you can board a boat trip to the uncrowded beaches of Isla Gorriti or take a cruise around Isla de Lobos, where a large colony of sea lions have made their home. Alternatively, sit back and watch the luxury yachts bobbing in the marina while the fishermen sell their daily catch. When the sun goes down, enjoy the view from an outdoor terrace and then join the party at one of the port’s numerous bars, which are open until late.
Explore the areas around Punta del Este by hiring a car and hitting the road. Drop by the Arboretum Lussisch for a memorable natural experience, or go and marvel at the spectacular design of Casapueblo, a hotel and museum designed by a Uruguayan artist named Carlos Paez Vilaro. On the eastern side, see the fashionable beaches and trendy nightclubs at La Barra then visit the exclusive Jose Ignacio for a little celebrity-spotting.
Punta del Este has its high season from Christmas through January: accommodation is often booked months in advance, and the prices are accordingly higher. Think about visiting the town between July and October, when migrating southern right whales pass close to the shore.
