This relaxed oasis of calm is the perfect escape from the city, and an opportunity to learn about the culture of Japan.

Portland Japanese Garden is known for being one of the most accurate reproductions of gardens of this type in another country. Make sure to take plenty of time for a gentle amble around, taking in the intricate and delicate design of these lovingly created spaces. There are five distinct areas in the garden, each with a character of its own. Admire the stones arranged in the shape of the constellation of The Plough in the Strolling Pond Garden. This area also houses a beautiful handmade moon bridge and a pagoda lantern which dates back a thousand years. In the Sand and Stone area, admire the precision and design of the lines raked in the sand, following the manner of Zen monasteries in Japan. Balance amid change is an important theme – enjoy the colour and vibrancy of the cherry trees and the azaleas in the Flat Garden during the spring, while autumn sees the maple trees taking prominence. The Tea Garden is the venue for authentic Japanese Tea Ceremonies, held on the third Saturday of each month – these are well worth planning a trip for. The Art in the Garden programme also allows you to appreciate art in this wonderful setting.Significant dates in the Japanese calendar are celebrated here, such as the Obon feast for the dead, Moon Viewing and New Year. You can learn about the ethos and the maintenance of Portland Japanese Garden at one of the regularly offered gardening workshops. There is also a gift shop on site, containing fragrant incense, traditional teapots and much more.Opening hours are from noon to 4 p.m. on Mondays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday. There are three 45-minute tours of the garden each day, and they are included in the entry charge.
