This characterful 19th-century cottage is one of two semi-detached cottages built soon after the moors railway line was laid, which connects moorland villages and towns to the coast. Named Platelayers Cottages (after the original residents whose job was ‘plate-laying’ as they built the nearby train tracks), they still witness the heritage steam trains which pass by. These mighty locomotives are sure to delight as they make their way to the seafaring town of Whitby. The owners have taken care to ensure that you have an exceptional stay. There are also cycle racks for your bikes, an enclosed garden with a patio and seating to enjoy the scenery, as well as the wild birds and wildlife.
The living room boasts a wood burner and the kitchen/dining room is well equipped. On the ground floor is a kingsize bedroom with a vaulted ceiling as well as a family bathroom. With beamed ceilings and exposed stone walls, this cottage has an authentic, characterful feel throughout. Upstairs, the second kingsize bedroom has a en-suite shower room, and there is also a twin bedroom. Stephenson Cottage is a great size for families as well as couples.
This is an enviable location for guests who love the great outdoors, with the incredible National Park just waiting to be explored. The nearest village is Levisham around a mile away, with a fabulous pub serving hearty traditional meals. The coast is only a 30-minute drive away, with scenic historical coastal towns and villages including Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Scarborough, all perfect for days out. Take a ride on the heritage steam train from Levisham to soak up the scenery across the rolling moorland, with quaint villages to visit along the way. Be prepared for grand landscapes and big views on the North York Moors. Starting with the dramatic panorama from Saltersgate over the Hole of Horcum, there is a wonderful scenic walk following a prominent track over Levisham Moor. If you are feeling adventurous, why not try ziplining through Dalby Forest tree tops or race along the trails on a Segway? Or try paddleboarding and the water assault course at Wykeham at the North Yorkshire Water Park. Flamingoland theme park and zoo is less than 20 minutes’ drive away, and great fun for children of all ages. For history lovers York is within an hours drive away, this vibrant city with an iconic cathedral has many attractions which guests can enjoy all year round, from the railway museum, Yorvik viking centre, the dungeons and the theatre. Throughout the seasons this a beautiful place to visit, with the colours of the forest changing from month to month - check out the local events for the upcoming Christmas period! A perfect choice for guests looking to reconnect with nature. Beach 17 miles.

Lovely property, I think key location could be clearer after a long drive, only 2 towels for 4 people but as weather hot managed as able to air on the line. Could not contact hosts as this was through another agency cottages.com. Would be happy to stay again as location perfect for the railway

This is a lovely house in a very quiet location, not sure we had appreciated quite how far it was from the main roads on some fairly tricky, narrow and steep roads with a fully loaded car. We did thoroughly enjoy watching the trains pass by and waving from the garden. Agree with previous comments about more pots and baking trays being needed. The tuck shop is a great idea but there was not much in it. Also, if you are going to charge for use of the washing machine and tumble drier this should be disclosed in the property description. Photos are a little deceptive for kitchen and dining room as you step up into them from the living room and the head height reduces quite a bit - tricky when 2 of your party are over 6 foot.

What a fabulous location, it’s a little more out of the way than I had expected with some miles of single track steep roads to navigate, but well worth it.Loved the steam train passing right by the cottage, loads of walks and cycle routes on the doorstep right next to Dalby Forrest. We saw deer walk past the cottage. The cottage is a good size and has everything you need. As others have mentioned the bathrooms do need updating but other than that we couldn’t complain. If you want a break away from the world I couldn’t think of a better place to stay.. as long as your confident in driving through some quite tricky roads
