The perfect place for families to enjoy a little art in addition to the natural beauty of Arizona.

It is almost impossible not to find something you will enjoy at the Phoenix Art Museum. The spacious design allows visitors to explore collections containing more than 17,000 works of art ranging from fine classical pieces to more contemporary works.

The museum is located on North Central Avenue, not far from downtown. It is open from Wednesday through Sunday, with free admission for children under six. Follow North Central Avenue from downtown to reach the museum. ‘Ollie the Trolley’ drops visitors off at the museum during the festive First Fridays arts walk, which includes open-air concerts and citywide dining.

The Phoenix Arts Association began its collection in 1915, but the museum itself did not open until 1959. Today, the 26,500-square-metre space is one of the largest art institutions in the Southwest. Visitors can take in wonderful views of Phoenix from several spots within the museum.

There are nine curatorial departments, which include American, European, and Asian art, as well as contemporary art. The Phoenix Arts Museum also showcases fashion and photography, as well as presenting festivals, independent art films, live performances, and instructive programs.

PhxArtKids Gallery is a great attraction for families with children, with works focusing on colour, shape, and line. Children can discover the art displays through a KidPack or a Scavenger Hunt, and special activities for teens are offered on select Wednesdays and Fridays. Be sure to catch a show in the cinema, and stop by the Firefly Room with its magical, sparkling lights.

Visitors can gain an appreciation of the cultural history of Arizona and the greater Southwest or choose to explore other subjects, ranging from paintings by Picasso and Monet, to Samurai armoury and World War II weaponry, to garments by Dior. It is this rich diversity that makes the Phoenix Art Museum truly unique.
