Updated Wexler Midcentury Movie Colony Home, Large Backyard+Pool & Spa - The Cas
The Cascades Retreat City ID #001358 TOT Permit #3085
Built in 1959 and designed by famous desert architect Donald Wexler, this 2900 square foot custom home has been beautifully updated by professional designer Christopher Kennedy. Highlights include lots of original midcentury desert modern architectural features, a sparkling blue swimming pool, detached spa, outdoor kitchen and fire pit, large Living Room, plus Sun Room with walls of glass facing the pool and fabulous mountain views, brand new Kitchen with a huge island, and plenty space for everyone. There are 3 generous bedrooms, 2 of them ensuite Masters with private bathrooms, and the third with a guest bathroom immediately adjacent.
The entryway is a work of art in itself, with a privacy gate from the front walk protecting the entrance corridor, which is surrounded by walls of glass. Pass through the glass front door and you’re welcomed by the spacious open floor plan that makes this house so perfect for a group of friends who want to spend time together.
The Living Room features an original rock wall fireplace, huge HDTV, sectional sofa and plenty of seating for everyone to gather and watch the game or movies. Adjacent to that is the Dining Area with seating for eight friends, and the completely remodeled open Kitchen, with an oversized island for easy food prep or presentation. On the other side of the fireplace is a spacious game room that is completely surrounded by walls of glass looking out to the back yard, pool and mountain view.
The three comfortable Bedrooms are perfectly separated at opposite corners of the house for maximum privacy. The North Master Bedroom features a King size bed, HDTV, private patio and huge bathroom with dual sink vanity, walk-in closet and spacious open walk-in shower. At the opposite end of the house are the second Master Suite with King size bed, HDTV, private bathroom and glass slider access to the back yard, near the fire pit. The third Bedroom, with King bed and HDTV, is at the other end of the hall after the Guest Bathroom, which also has a door to the back yard, so it doubles as a pool bathroom.
Speaking of the pool, you’re really going to enjoy the private back yard, featuring an updated sparkling blue swimming pool, detached spa tub, fire pit for conversation and cocktails on chilly desert evenings, and an awesome outdoor Kitchen with dining table. And all of this is surrounded by gorgeous mountain views!

This property exceeded the expectations we had prior to seeing it in person. Wonderful flow and attention to detail made for both interior and exterior relaxation and enjoyment of the peaceful surroundings. Would definitely rent it again!
Filthy pool and property disrepair - doesn’t live up to the listing
Beware. The listing shows pictures of a pristine pool, and beautifully appointed, fresh, clean living spaces. We were extremely upset to find the pool was filthy with cracks and chipped bottom, the carpets in all bedrooms were filthy, and pieces of furniture inside and out, as well as the shade awning, were frayed and in disrepair. The pool was not only filthy - pool walls and bottom covered in algae - there was a large, jagged area of the pool bottom that had chipped away, creating a safety hazard!
We went straight to the management offices to find solution, as the conditions were not at all what we thought we khad paid so much for, and had anticipated for so long. We weren’t able to use the pool or the bedrooms because of how dirty they were. They tried to suggest the yellow film and brown spots were merely from high winds and pollen. We disagreed. The best they could do was to have the pool and rug cleaned ASAP. We were told that they would both be sent immediately and we would receive compensation for these issues - still haven’t received any.
The next morning, the carpet cleaner said the carpets were so saturated with dirt and stains they required full deep, wet clean and extraction. The carpets were cleaned thoroughly; however, they would not dry for another full day. We had to keep all of our belonging in the living room and only access the bedrooms to sleep for the first two days of our stay.
The pool cleaner came the second day. He said the following: it wasn’t a good idea to use the pool until he was able to clean, sweep, vacuum and add a significant amount of chlorine; the yellow film had nothing to do with winds, or pollen, but was an overgrowth of algae, and the brown spots were an even more problematic brown algae; the pool would look pretty good by mid week, but there are issues that would never let it to look like the pool in the listing photos (clearly taken long ago); brown algae would probably take more than a week to go away; crack in the filter/filler so it runs constantly and allows all chemicals to seep out of the pool; without daily clean/chlorine the algae wouldn’t go away. We weren’t comfortable using the pool the first two and a half days of our vaca! By mid week the pool looked ok but still had the brown spots and some yellow. Yuck!
This really put a damper on vacation. These issues weren't mentioned in the listing and should have been fixed BEFORE we arrived! We felt like we were tricked!

Needs Attention
A lot to like about both the home itself and the location. However, there is a lot of basic maintenance needed. The house presents as neglected, maybe just over rented. One example - none of the TV's in the bedrooms work "weak signal"; the TV in the living room only works if you open the cabinet to the cable box. The indoor amenities are kind of important given the highly restrictive short term rental laws in PS - so restrictive that simply laughing in the pool is grounds for eviction and fine. That said, with not too much maintenance, maybe take the home off the market for a month and address the neglected items - it could return to its former glory as a classic, PS home.
This home has lots of space to move around and is very comfortable. The pool , backyard, firepit, area were an amazing place for the family to hang out and swim. The location is very nice and close to downtown. We had one issue with a chirping smoke alarm and the maintenance company was right out to replace the batteries. The kitchen has most everything you could need. The garage is very small and we were unable to park a full size SUV in it. Overall this was a great house to rent.
The house was absolutely beautiful. The decorations and furniture were A+ and the house was fully stocked with everything that was needed for the entire trip, minus the food. The location was perfect and within walking distance to downtown. There were only a couple fo problems with the place that need immediate attention. As mentioned in other reviews, the back sliding door is outrageously hard to open and the pool needs resurfacing. There are large chunks of plaster that have been dislodged and there is a possibility someone can hurt their feet. The most frustrating thing about the house and the neighborhood is the no outside noise ordinance that is strictly enforced. You can't play any music device outside and you can't raise your voice above a normal speaking level. We know this because a neighbor called the city on us for talking loudly at the pool. We were a family of 6 (parents and young adults) having a good time and the city came out. They determined that our noise was not excessive but it was very annoying. The property manager did a good job warning us that this was being strictly enforced and we heeded their warnings by not playing our music outside and we still received a complaint in the middle of the day. I know that this is a Palm Springs ordinance but I think this neighborhood just takes it to another level. We have had friends that have stayed in other (Palm Springs) areas and have even played music outside and never received any complaints. All in all the house is great and worth the price. Just beware if you are planning to enjoy the outside space.
Very relaxing place to stay and great for 3 couples. The pool was sparkling clean and the location was very close to restaurants. Fully stocked kitchen and beautiful backyard with a large eating area and BBQ, misters, and a fire pit. Would definitely stay there again in the future.
The house was very nice. The slider to the backyard/pool was very hard to open and close. The property management group never responded to my complaint.

Mechanical Issues Galore and Terrible Property Manager Service
Based on the online profile, we were very excited to be staying at "The Cascades" property. Our excitement quickly turned to frustration when we arrived and spent 20 minutes trying to get the lock box open to get the key to open the door. That was a sign of problems to come.
We next discovered the refrigerator was not cooling properly (it was supposed to be brand new) and one of the AC units was not working (it was July, and 105 degrees outside). Calls to the Property Manager were met with a recording "We close at 5pm. We will only call you back tonight IF IT IS A TRUE EMERGENCY" - that was emphasized several times in case you missed it.
Long story short, we ended up with repairmen in the house for 2 of our 4 days stay as it wasn't just the outside AC unit that needed to be replaced, but they replaced the entire heating and AC system, and once that was done, the new system blew something electrical (we had to tell the repair guys we smelled something burning) so then that had to be repaired too.
Once things start going wrong, you start to notice smaller things - while the house is updated, the stove top looks to be at least 20 years old and for some reason would take over a minute for the gas to light (we were literally standing over it with a lighter, worried we might blow up the house), and then the back main sliding door to the pool is basically off its tracks and no matter how many times you try to put it back, opening the sliding door requires applying precise pressure on the lower 1/3 of the door frame, making it impossible to go in or outside holding anything in your hand, or that the house was not stocked with any shampoo or soap when we checked in, or that the kitchen lacks some basic items to facilitate cooking like mixing bowls, knives sharp enough to cut anything other than a block of cheese, or containers to store any sort of leftovers.
Even all of that might have been okay, except that the Property Management company consistently didn't know what one person had said to another, and they didn't follow through on their commitments, and when we politely expressed our frustration with the stay as we were departing, they promised to have the "reservations manager" contact us to see what they could do, and of course no one has (after repeated further messages.).
The weekend could have been so nice. But it wasn't.
We did not realize our refrigerator was broken upon arrival so purchased a lot of food only to throw it away. Management dropped off a mini fridge which could fit a few items and never once apologized for the inconvenience. In fact, I was told that things are beyond their control like a light bulb or appliance going out. Besides the AC, the fridge is the most important appliance and essential for a nice stay. I reached out to them several times to make things right, like perhaps offering us a credit for all the food thrown out. I was repeatedly told that a manager would contact me. It has been almost 2 weeks and no one has contacted me. I am extremely disappointed with how they handled it and would never stay at an Oranj property again. I understand things go wrong but it's how it's handled afterwards that matters. They chose to ignore me and to not deal with it at all which is totally unacceptable.
Beautiful, well equipped house. Loved the backyard!
We had a great stay. The only drawback was that it was on a busier street than we expected, but it wasn't too noisy, only in the front bedroom. We couldn't fit both cars in the garage because of the build outs but plenty of room in the driveway. The management company was really responsive while checking in. Really conveniently located to downtown. We loved it!
Excellent location for walking, shopping, restaurants. Excellent pool and garden. Living space good. Bath towels need changing and garage needs upgrade.
We loved the property so much!
The home was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. We were provided with an abundance of beach towels. The backyard pool was heated and the hot tub was perfect for chilly evenings.
The main downtown area was a short walk away.
Beautiful comfortable home to spend a day or a week. This was my first VRBO and I wasn’t disappointed. The backyard & pool are spa like with a fire table for evening chats and a BBQ area for intimate gatherings with surrounding misters. The 75 inch big screen tv in the living room was a gathering place for family & friends. I will be back!
Loved the proximity to the main street but also that it was removed and very quiet. Beautiful pool area and fire pit, great kitchen. Perfect for 6 friends or 3 couples.
It was lovely stay in an original mid century home. We had an excellent time. The only thing that would have topped it would have been a view of the mountain range which may be possible if they trimmed the neighboring hedge. Other than that we were very happy.
Check-in was easy - Cascades is as good as it looks in the photos. Great home for friends to share - everything you could want for a relaxing few days. We all enjoyed our stay.
Location and aesthetics are important to us. We’re weary of the mid-century vibe so predominant. We wanted a place that was contemporary tasteful and had no blown up pictures of Marilyn Monroe on the walls. We got this and more with Cascades. And the people at Oranj Palm were courteous and very responsive to a small maintenance issue.
We absolutely loved our stay at this home! The home itself is beautifully decorated and the pool and hot tub were fantastic. Oranj Palm was also incredibly easy to deal with and very accommodating.
